The 17th annual Honolulu Festival was set to celebrate its Friendship Gala at the Hawaii Convention Center March 12 when the Japan earthquake and tsunami struck. Coordinators chose to continue with the event, offering tribute and collecting donations for those afflicted by the March 11 crisis.

Meant to promote friendship between Hawaii and the Asia-Pacific region, hundreds gathered, many in traditional garments, to relish top island cuisine and music, song and dance from the Pacific Rim.
