Punchbowl resident Kathy Custer, owner of Keiki Sitters & Ohana Helpers, cruises on her motorcycle with 2-year-old Ipo, a Reindeer Chihuahua. “Ipo loves the motorcycle!” Cathy says. “He gets to feel the wind all over his body and bark at dogs as we drive by. On the cruiser motorcycle I carry him in my purse. He likes to jump out and have his front paws on my thigh and his back paws in the bag. On the sporty motorcycle, I wear a backpack on my front and tie his leash to it so he can move around, but won’t go too far. We have been cruisin’ the island together since he was a pup.”

When Albert and Beverly Gouveia brought a pup home to Mililani eight years ago, it was the weekend the Duke Kahanamoku stamp was released. Naturally, the pooch was named Duke. Beverly’s mom Janice Silva did much of the caring for “Dukey Boy.”

Writes Beverly: “Mom and Duke love each other very much.

When she naps on the sofa after lunch, he’s right beside her on the floor. The moment she wakes and reaches for her walker, he runs to alert us. Mom looks at MidWeek, and seeing this photo will be a wonderful Christmas present for her.”

My name is Niki Libarios and I run shibainuhawaii.com along with Chris Luke. We have an 8-month-old black-and-tan Shiba Inu named Katsumi Firefox, and we live in Makiki. This is a photo from our July Shiba Inu Hawaii Meet Up at the Bark Park. We don’t know all the owners’ names, unfortunately, but we do know all the dogs’ names! From left: Madison, Jiro, Mika (not a Shiba, but honorary play-date invitee), Katsumi Firefox, Don, Tobi, Sachi, Ami, Kuma, Renji and Miki. (I’m the one kneeling, third from the left with a blue printed shirt.)

Shibas are originally from Japan and were bred as hunting dogs. They are double-coated Spitz-like dogs that come in four different colors: red, sesame, black-and-tan and cream (not recognized by the AKC). They are extremely smart, and can be difficult to train because they are so headstrong. Shibas are very independent (some people compare them to cats) but also loyal to their human companions.

Sandy Tsukiyama and her 13-month old Flemish Giant (Sandy variety) rabbit named June reside in Manoa. They are members of the Hawaii All-Breed Rabbit Club. June weighs 16 pounds - 2 pounds over the weight minimum for adult females.

Sandy says June is a “typical Flemish Giant, mellow, likes to be petted, loves papaya and pineapple peels.

This is a photo of Keegan Nozawa and Robin, a 4-year-old poi dog, after completing the Kaaawa 5K walk-run hosted by Kualoa Ranch as a benefit for Kaaawa Elementary School. Robin and her family live on a small farm in Kaaawa. Robin probably has some Australian sheepdog in her veins as she dislikes disorder. Her jobs on the farm are helping to move (or not helping, depending on the situation) animals and to keep feral chickens away from the petting zoo and pony ride animals while they eat. She loves Keegan, having a job, being praised for good work and a nice piece of rawhide at the end of morning chores.

Photo from Dawn Nozawa.

Kaneohe residents Alan and Karen Kim show off their parrots, 20-year-old Millie and 18-year-old Ipo. Millie, a very talkative African Grey who only loves her Daddy, is smart, does “shaka” and like most Greys knows she’s better than all other birds. Ipo, the Blue-fronted Amazon, is soft-spoken, sweet, clucks like a chicken and crows like a rooster and will laugh at anything. Both love their veggies, fruits, seeds, nuts and crackers. Popcorn is Millie’s favorite - she begs for it: “Mama, want some popcorn!” (She gets it). The Kim residence is very noisy and entertaining.

Dean Takamine and Nicole Tsunoda of Honolulu are the proud new pet parents of 4-month-old Haku. The furry little guy was born in Hilo and was a Christmas present from Dean to Nicole. Haku is 50 percent Shih Tzu and 50 percent Bichon Frise, which equals to 100 percent adorable. He loves to wrestle with stuffed animals, but doesn’t like taking a bath.

My name is Bao Kaanoi and I live in the Pearl City area. My dog’s name is Kapono and he was adopted from the Hawaiian Humane Society. I believe Kapono is 2 or 3 years old, and according to a breed DNA test he is three-quarters Shih Tzu and one-quarter Lhasa apso. Although Kapono is fearful and not very sociable with other dogs, I love him very much. I try my best to work with him every day by taking him on daily walks and being the best pack leader I can be. I am currently looking for a dog trainer to help us. I know he has the potential to overcome his issues with patience and hard work.

MidWeek staff writer Alana Folen (left) and friend Cindy Paliracio attempt to pose for a Christmas photo with Alana’s 5-year-old dog Kea next to his very own “Charlie Brown” Christmas tree. This was one of the many outtakes of the bunch, as Kea would rather give kisses to those he loves than capture the perfect holiday picture.

Kea is a yellow Lab mix, and his personality is a complete and utter resemblance to the dog Marley in the film Marley & Me.

When he’s not getting into mischief and pulling ornaments off the tree, this rascal of a dog loves playing with his toys Chick, Chicken and Squeaky, helping take out the trash and hanging out with his family. Kea wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Earl Handy of Kaneohe found what today is his pet rooster “Little Chooker” aka Fluffy along the road near Heeia State Park, a victim of an automobile.

“His right leg was paralyzed and totally limp, and he was moving his head back and forth like Stevie Wonder; obviously he had a head injury. I took him in and force-fed him with a syringe, as he wouldn’t eat. I also massaged his limp leg, and within a week he was hobbling around and eating on his own. Now he looks and acts perfectly normal, and thinks he’s a person. He has bonded to me rather than other chickens, although he does like fighting with other neighborhood roosters. He won’t eat chicken feed but rather prefers what I eat, and especially likes sweets such as granola bars and Fig Newtons.”

Last week, Chooker was attacked by a dog, but Earl says he’s doing just fine.

Happy Halloween! says Bonnie Makinano of Kaneohe. Bonnie, who is dressed up as a cavewoman, is pictured with KJ (dressed as a lobster), Pomai (pumpkin), Malie (bumblebee) and Bella (giraffe). The pooches - a Lhasa Apso, a mini-Pinscher and a Manchester toy terrier mix - are all siblings born in July 2008.

Bonnie found all the dogs’ costumes at Ross Dress For Less in Windward City Shopping Center, which also is her favorite store to buy her doggie clothes and beds.

My name is Miho Olsen. I am originally from Japan and I live with my husband, Steve, and two German shepherds in Royal Kunia. The big boy is Banchan (“Cute Guard Dog,” in English). He is 2 years old and loves hiking, swimming, jogging and Frisbee. Little sister is Hanako (“Flower Girl”), 9 months old. She is very friendly and loves running and chasing with Banchan all the time. I love German shepherds. They are very sweet, loyal, strong and smart! From catching a small fly to alerting us about burglars, I can trust them 100 percent!

This was taken during the celebration of Sir Bruno Maximus’ first birthday. Pictured with Bruno are his “dad” Norman Lazo and “mom” Marichris Diga of Aiea. Bruno is an active and free-spirited English bulldog. He loves to play and usually barks for what he wants - water, food or the fan to keep him cool. He is afraid of vacuums and tinfoil.

My name is Macey Holyak, age 18 from Kaneohe, and this is my Dachshund Delilah. She was born at only 3 ounces, with a cleft palate, and given a slim chance of survival. My family bonded together to tube feed Delilah for eight months, and then she had surgery to repair most of her palate. Last week Delilah had her second birthday and is a thriving 7 pounds. Truly a miracle! Delilah has taught my family that life is a present, and every day a gift!

Hi! I’m Kerry Miller, MidWeek calendar editor and staff writer. That’s me in the photo with my kitty, Brie. Don’t worry, she’s not scared in this picture; for some reason she always has that “deer in headlights” look on her face. I think she’s just really curious. So curious, in fact, that she’s tested out sleeping in both the bathroom sink and the shower. The result: apparently both are pretty comfortable for curling up and taking a cat nap.

I’m both sad and excited to say that this issue of MidWeek is my last, as I am moving back to New Hampshire this month, where I am originally from.

Thanks all you MidWeek readers for being so awesome and continuing to be loyal to this wonderful publication!

P.S.: Brie is coming with me, and she’s very excited about her first trip on an airplane!

“They don’t call them lovebirds for nothing,” says Rachel Breitwiser of Kiwi, a peach-faced lovebird she’s had for two years.

“He likes head rubs, kisses and riding on our heads. Dislikes include stuffed animals, balloons and staying up past his bedtime.”

Kiwi and Rachel reside in Kailua.

It’s hard to tell who looks more contented in this photo, Leilani Schlesser, age 8, of Mo‘ili‘ili, or her family cat Cleo, age 5. Cleo is a tabby and, says Leilani’s mother Malia, “the most gentle cat you can imagine.”
