Summertime means summer concert season, and Band Camp, in its fifth year, is always a big one. This year’s headliner is Matisyahu, the orthodox Jewish reggae sensation - yeah, the guy with the beard and the hat. Radio hits King Without A Crown and his cover of The Police’s Message In A Bottle will be sure-fiah crowd pleasers, and don’t forget, this guy also beat boxes! With Yellowcard (Ocean Avenue and they have the guy who plays the violin!), Plain White T’s and Madina Lake, this show will rock (and reggae) your world.

OUR FAVORITE THINGS

Nobu Waikiki Sake Blessing - June 5 (Molly)

There’s something about celebrity chefs that makes them seem like rock stars. It’s all about that unshakable confidence and the slight (and sometimes not-so-slight) arrogance that seems to be a common personality trait among them. And of course, they can cook, which is always hot. I probably have more crushes on famous chefs than I do on actors or musicians, and of course, the more I love their work, the more interesting they seem. So when SMART attended the opening of Nobu Waikiki, I was more star struck than I’ve ever been when I saw Nobu Matsuhisa in person. This is the man who played a major role in popularizing traditional and fusion Japanese food in many of the U.S.‘s major cities. He pioneered the tempura and soft-shell crab roll, which have become staples to Japanese food lovers. And his black cod with miso (like the miso butterfish we all know and love) is absolutely incredible. Love, love, love it ... almost as much as I love having this picture of myself and Nobu. I’m officially smitten.
