Local designer Jane Hoskins of Tiare Hawaii (inset photo) has been invited to the exclusive 2012 Academy Awards Celebrity Red Carpet Style Lounge Feb. 24 at the L’Ermitage Beverly Hills hotel, where some of Hollywood’s most fashionable stars will be in attendance.

“We are really honored to be invited and are looking forward to the event,” says Hoskins. “It’s for the Academy Awards nominees and other A-list celebrities. We will have a booth there, they can try on the clothes if they want to, and we will be giving out little gift bags.”

Hoskins, a North Shore resident who studied biology and fashion design at the University of Hawaii, was inspired to start Tiare Hawaii while traveling the globe with her best friend who is a flight attendant.

“I wanted to incorporate the colors and beauty of nature, my love for travel and the feel of Hawaii into something that I can share with others,” says Hoskins about her fashions.

“Every piece is an inspiration, from the hand-dyed fabrics, to eyelet details, to the flow of the dresses reflecting the waterfalls nearby all are inspired by the natural beauty of Hawaii. It’s made by hand with love for those beachy days in the sun or balmy nights under the stars.”

Hoskins also has been busy with Tiare Hawaii’s new spring collection to be released in a few weeks. She also will be attending her first trade show, the Pool Trade Show at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas next month.

Tiare Hawaii can be found in various boutiques across the state, as well as on the Mainland and overseas, including in California, New York, Texas, England, Japan and Dominican Republic. On Oahu, it’s carried at Aloha Aina in Waikiki, Fighting Eel, Flower Child, LMS Boutique in Manoa, North Shore Surf Shop and San Lorenzo.

Guevarra Arcega

Wednesday - January 18, 2012

Inspired by her grandmother’s passion for sewing and crafting, local girl Heather Guevarra Arcega is living her dream as a fashion designer with her own line, Guevarra Arcega.

“When I was 5, I cut into my mom’s silk and lace pillowcases and made a poorly made tunic dress for my younger sister who was 2 at the time,” says Arcega, 30 (pictured at right). “I got in trouble, spanked, and I’ve been addicted (to designing and creating her own clothing) since.”

A graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy, Arcega lives in San Francisco and attended Academy of Art University, where she was awarded a runway spot in both the annual Academy of Art Spring Fashion Show and Macy’s Passport Fashion Show in 2006. She also studied art history and fashion design in Italy for a semester, and after graduation worked on product and design for various brands, such as Hurley International, Lucky Brand Jeans, Joe Boxer, Dockers and some Walmart baby apparel lines.

“Guevarra Arcega is a contemporary women’s fashion brand,” says Arcega. “It’s very romantic, but there’s an edge to it because I put my life and my soul into it.

It has my personality (sweet, but a little hard-edged) and people can relate and are attracted to that.

“My main goal is to focus on quality, fit and the use of finer fabrics to make women look and feel beautiful, luxurious and empowered. All my clothing is San Francisco-made and we produce domestically in the U.S.”

Guevarra Arcega can be found in some San Francisco and Bay Area boutiques. In Honolulu, it’s at Collins & 8th (560 Pensacola St.). And there’s an online boutique at guevarraarcega.com.

“I hope to expand to two boutiques in California and one boutique in New York City,” adds Arcega. “Next is Arcega Mens.

I studied men’s suiting back at the Academy of Art University, then hopefully a kid’s line with my daughter Chanel, and a mature women’s line with my aunt and mother, and a lifestyle brand with home furniture and accessories.”

Wednesday - December 07, 2011

Just in time for the busy holiday shopping season, Laurie Oda and Nicholas Leong have paired up to open Basique Threads, a new store at Ward Warehouse (near T&C Surf) offering contemporary urban fashions for men and women.

“Our name, Basique Threads, derives from the types of styles we carry,” explains Oda. “We’re looking for pieces that have fairly basic prints, but are still interesting and unique in terms of the cut or style of the item. We have styles for any age and demographic, but it’s all about how you choose to make it your own. It’s a style nightmare when you run into someone wearing the exact same outfit as you, but when you accessorize and mix and match our basic and fun pieces, you can create a look of your own.”

Brands you’ll find include Bleulab, Insight, Blaque Label, Comune, Neff, Local Celebrity, Garnett Jewelry, Upper Class Label, Primrose and more.

Both Oda and Leong are graduates of Punahou School and Santa Clara University with degrees in business management. Oda, who has always had an interest in shopping and fashion, has worked at Abercrombie Kids, Hollister, Macy’s, Victoria’s Secret and Bamboo Sky. Leong has worked in restaurants, parking management and as a tennis coach. “We both wanted to start our own business and put our degrees to good use,” says Oda. “With Nick’s strong sense of entrepreneurship and my retail background, starting Basique Threads worked to our strengths.”

“For each collection, we design for those times of the year, so we look at what’s flowering, fruiting or breeding and choose plants and animals whose time it is,” adds

Kneubuhl. “And how the Hawaiians used these plants and animals is part of the story.”

Kealopiko is available in various stores throughout Hawaii and online. For more information or a list of stores that carry their products, visit kealopiko.com or call 808-393-8280.

Since she was a little girl, Kei Kinoshita knew she wanted her own clothing line. So, she went on to earn a degree in fashion design from the Osaka Gakuen Fashion Institute, and worked at Japanese apparel company Renown, Inc. and then as an assistant with Japanese colorist Setsuko Yamada in California before moving to New York City, where she created made-to-order high-fashion clothing for individual clients.

In 1992, she moved to Hawaii and launched Designed by Kei Corporation and later the brand Be Aloha. In 2009, she debuted a new brand, To kei, which she describes as mod and style with Island flavor. She also opened a boutique at 619 Kapahulu Ave. (suite 201) in March, and plans to have a retail outlet in Kailua.

“When my children left for Japan for college in 2008 and 2010, I really wanted to put all my efforts into making my dream come true,” explains Kinoshita on creating To kei. “Armed with all of my skills and knowledge from my career as a couturier in New York, I decided to create a new concept sophisticated yet enjoyable wear that is well-made.”

Kinoshita also offers “semi-customized” orders. For an extra fee, customers can choose any style from her line, and have it made to their specific measurements.

Iolani On Kona Street

Since the founding of IOLANI Sportswear by Edith and Keiji Kawakami in 1953, IOLANI has been an ever evolving contemporary island wear company.

Now, with son Lloyd and his wife Carla at the helm, IOLANI continues to work by the founding philosophy of the business - hard work, honesty and commitment to excellence while creating quality island fashions for men, women, children and hula dancers from around the world.

They recently celebrated the opening of IOLANI on Kona Street, allowing them to showcase their newest, most contemporary designs. “It’s been tremendously rewarding to see our new look become so popular,” says Carla. “Our men’s line offers two fits - the traditional aloha shirt fit and the new contemporary leaner shirt with added detail. Our Kamalei line is a sophisticated hula-inspired line that moves with the dancer. IO-Sport is the solid body men’s line made of our exclusive (moisture) wicking fabric. And IOLANI women’s is a collection of fun, sassy dresses and tops.

“The final piece to the puzzle is fit. With every new design and with every new fabrication, our designer Grace Tsutahara ensures the garment looks and fits beautifully. The result is simply stunning.”

Iolani also continues to produce its island attire in Hawaii. And if you’ve ever seen local band Manoa DNA on stage, they were probably wearing IOLANI. That’s because Lloyd is the D for Dad in Manoa DNA, while sons Nick and Alex make up the N and A.

IOLANI is available at IOLANI on Kona Street (1234 Kona St., between Piikoi and Pensacola), and at Macy’s, Hilo Hattie, Navy Exchange and numerous boutiques around the Islands, as well as on the Mainland and in Japan.

For more information, visit iolani.com or call 593-4520.

Ida Teiti has always enjoyed wearing pareos, and she wears them in many different ways.

She also has a love for fashion and design, and in 2008 created Tiare Teiti, a clothing line for men and women that “brings the colors, designs and feel of Tahiti to Hawaii.”

A flight attendant for Hawaiian Airlines since 1986, Teiti was born and raised in Tautira, Tahiti, until she was orphaned at age 9, and came to Hawaii as a hanai daughter of entertainers Don and Josie Over. Now 47, Teiti returns to her roots through her fashions, which represent the colors, culture and women of Tahiti.

“I played around with clothes for myself for the longest time, and the compliments I received from others helped me gain the courage to actually try to design a line of clothing,” she says. “Tiare Teiti allows me to share my ideas with others.”

Tiare Teiti is available at T&C Surf Designs, Get Wet in Windward Mall and at tiareteiti.com.

MISSING POLYNESIA

Wednesday - April 13, 2011

While traveling back and forth between Hawaii and the Mainland, Meilin Vitale-Vae thought about how people were always missing home. So when it was time to name her business, she decided to call it Missing Polynesia.

“They were Hawaiians missing Hawaii, Samoans missing Samoa, Tongans missing Tonga, Polynesians missing the Polynesian Islands,” explains Vitale-Vae, a 1999 graduate of Waipahu High School.

Missing Polynesia, which VitaleVae co-owns with husband Richard Vae, offers traditional and contemporary Island art on modern-day wear. The store, located at Harbor Center (98-029 Hekaha St. Building 5, Unit 32), behind Cutter Ford in Aiea, carries women’s, men’s and boy’s hand-painted clothing, as well as its own clothing line called LeApia, and an assortment of Polynesian jewelry and accessories.

“We believe in relationships and in hard work,” says VitaleVae. “We believe in originality and try our best to make every piece that we paint and put together as different as possible. Being in the apparel business is tough, so if we have to labor day and night to make sure we can bring something different to the table, that’s what we’ll do to make sure that people will come back.”

Vows Bridal and Formals

Wednesday - April 06, 2011

For teens all across the country, spring season also is prom season.

According to Vickie Wong, owner of Vows Bridal and Formals, the trends for prom dresses this year are high-low hemlines, short ball gowns, three-dimensional details such as flower accents, and layers of ruffles on the hemline. She also notes that full princess ball gowns are still a popular request.

After a disappointing experience with her own wedding in 1984, Wong opened her bridal and formal wear store in March 1985 with a goal of providing exceptional service, as well as a great selection that meets a variety of price ranges.

The store, located at 1249 S. Beretania St., also is known for its skillful alteration service, and recently expanded its formals and men’s department, adding more than 500-square-feet of space.

“Before shopping for prom, the parent and child must discuss on a price that is comfortable for them,” says Wong on her advice for teens still in search for their prom attire. “Do not fall in love with something that you do not wish to pay for. You will not be able to find a $500 gown for $150, therefore nothing else will match up and either you will end up spending more or have an unhappy girl. Also, do not pre-determine color choice. Design is more important than color, and manufacturers may not necessarily produce the color that you wish for. Be open-minded - the only way you know what you don’t want is by trying it on.”

Featured here are some of the newest designs available at Vows Bridal and Formals. For more information, call 591-6612 or visit: vowsbridalandformals.com.

Wednesday - March 09, 2011

Spring is nearly here, and if you haven’t already done so it’s time to update your wardrobe. Goodbye to the usual dark colors and heavy fabrics of fall and winter fashions. Hello to bright, happy colors along with comfortable silhouettes, such as the return of the long, flowing maxi dress.

According to Ken Downing, senior vice president and fashion director for Neiman Marcus, this season’s must-haves include:

* The color coral
* The white wardrobe - that’s zero color head-to-toe style
* Boho influences
* Flat sandals
* Florals
* Crossbody bags
* Stripes
* The spring face - sun-kissed bliss in shades of coral, peach and apricot
* Wide-leg pants

Twins Gerald and John Alexander Polyascko, designers of Polyascko2 Sportswear, presented their latest collection at an exclusive fashion show Jan. 22 at the Waikiki EDITION hotel.

The brothers, 31, were born in Arizona and moved to Hawaii at age 2. They graduated from Radford High School in 1997 and attended Academy of Art for college in San Francisco. Wednesday - January 12, 2011

Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier, 22, has landed in Las Vegas for the Miss America pageant, taking place Jan. 15 at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, and scheduled to air on ABC.

Fuselier, who is French, English and Winnebago Tribe Indian, was born in Louisiana and moved to Hawaii at age 10. She was homeschooled and graduated from Hawaii Pacific University with a degree in international relations.

In addition to her goal of becoming Miss America, Fuselier wants to go back to school for a master’s degree in social work with hopes of becoming a counselor.

Here, she gives MidWeek an exclusive look at some of her favorite fashion pieces she’ll be wearing throughout the week of the Miss America pageant.

Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier’s fashion and beauty favorites

Believe it or not, this Miss Hawaii describes her style as casual. She likes to wear simple cotton dresses, jeans, shorts and “always” slippers.

“I don’t like a lot of gaudy stuff,” she says. “I think less is more.”

Fuselier lists Jovani as one of her favorite designers, as well as Gionni Straccia, who is the designer of her evening gown for the national pageant. A favorite store of hers is La Casa Hermosa in Florida, which is owned by her aunt Robin Flemming.

Her favorite beauty item is Dior mascara, and her beauty secret is water - inside and out. “I drink lots of water,” says the North Shore resident. “And I just feel more beautiful after being in the ocean.”

Her hobbies include baking, cave diving and sewing. And to stay fit, she does Pilates, swims and, in preparation for Miss America, added weight training to her regiment.

She loves to eat fish, and notes the ahi salad at Big City Diner as one of her favorite dishes.

NOTEWORTHY

Wednesday - December 15, 2010

In an effort to elevate and challenge “what has become the norm for casual menswear in Honolulu,” friends Jay Otaguro, Eric Takemoto and Jason Kawakami have opened Noteworthy, an upscale, street-contemporary boutique with a primary concentration on men’s cut-and-sew apparel located at the corner of Keeaumoku and Makaloa streets.

“We all believe that clothing makes the man,” they explain. “The idea to open up a store spawned from a discussion about the voids in Honolulu’s men’s fashion. We thought to ourselves, why not create a place that we would want to shop and fill it with clothing that we would wear?”

Some of the brands available are Alife, Black Apple, Comune, GPPR, Naked & Famous Denim, Norse Projects, Public Label by The Hundreds, Public School, Super sunglasses and 3Sixteen.

The store also shares the block with other notable men’s fashion stores Kicks/HI, Leilow and Crooks and Castles. “As far as our location, we could not have asked for a better spot,” they say. “Collectively, we plan to make Keeaumoku/Makaloa Honolulu’s premier fashion district.”

In addition to their Noteworthy duties, Takemoto, a 1998 graduate of Kaiser High School with a master’s in counseling psychology from Chaminade University, also works as a college-prep counselor at Kaiser. Kawakami, a 1998 graduate of Kalani High School, is CEO of Tantriq Entertainment. And Otaguro, a 1997 graduate of Konawaena High with a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Oregon, previously worked as a general manager for Abercrombie and Fitch.

Noteworthy is located at 631A Keeaumoku St. on the second floor, across from Walgreens. For more information, visit noteworthysociety.com or call 499-7248.

Award-winning designer Amos Kotomori launches his second collection of men’s shirts exclusively at Neiman Marcus at Ala Moana Center this month, targeting the romance market for grooms and groomsmen.

Here, he gives MidWeek an exclusive look at some of his newest prints. “These shirts are not only for special occasions, but they capture a feeling that makes every day special,” says Kotomori, a graduate of McKinley High School. “The concept of this photo shoot with MidWeek was about the groom giving the bride his final gift before the ceremony - the floral bouquet.”

The collection, called Kotomori-Limited Edition, features shirts that are made with a double weave of silk and cotton sewn by tailors, and French-seamed finish, so there are no raw edges next to the skin.

“The shirts have the feeling of fine fabric with an image that has a message,” adds Kotomori. “Each shirt is a giclee - a French laser process used traditionally for fine art.” Kotomori, who also is known for his beautiful designs in jewelry and gowns, released his first men’s contemporary shirt collection at Neiman Marcus last September. The shirts sold out within the first week and orders were taken for the next shipment.

Kotomori will make a special appearance at Neiman Marcus Dec. 7 and 10 from noon to 4 p.m. Featured here is a selection of Kotomori-Limited Edition, along with gowns, jewelry and floral bouquets made by the designer.

The store also features limited, one-of-a-kind items made by Hawaii’s newest and most talented fashion designers, artisans and jewelers, as well as established local designers.

In an effort to give local fashion designers an opportunity to begin or advance their careers, Island Edge hosted a fashion competition where designers were required to submit a men’s or women’s clothing outfit in the form of one wearable garment and design sketches. The winner, Sina Thompson, was announced Nov. 12, and as part of her prize, she will have her outfit manufactured and sold in the store, receive naming rights for the label and royalties from all sales. She also received $2,000 in prize money and $1,000 to donate to a charity of her choice. The store plans to make this an annual competition.

Natural Eye Express Service

Step 1: Prime - Apply an eye primer (Sephora Collection Perfecting Eye Primer, $14) from the lash line to the brow bone and under the lower lash line to help provide a foundation for eye shadow to adhere, blend easier and promote longevity of look.

Step 2: Shade - Apply a neutral eye shadow (Sephora Collection Beauty in a Box Natural Eye Tutorial; $36) with a brush from lash line to brow to create a natural, even base.

Step 3: Define - Apply a rich, brown eyeliner (Sephora Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner in matte brown/black, $12) around the entire eye and onto the center of the lid to shape the eye and provide a foundation for the eye shadow to adhere and blend. Then blend eyeshadow lightly to the creases of the eye and use small circular strokes to blend the two textures of product together.

Step 4: Highlight - Apply a shimmery eyeshadow (Sephora Moonshadow Trio in Sunbaked N2, $17) with a brush from lash line to brow to create a highlight that will contrast with the eye liner.

Step 5: Curl eyelashes (Sephora Eyelash Curler, $16) and apply a light coat of mascara to the top lashes only (Sephora Atomic Volume Ultra Black, $15).

Cat Eye Express Service

Step 1: Frame - Using a brow pencil (Sephora sculpting brow pencil, $10), shape your arches so they start directly above the inner corner of the eye, peak just above the outer iris and end where an imaginary diagonal line from your nostril to the outer corner of the eye would hit your brows.

Step 2: Highlight - Pat eye primer (Sephora Collection Perfecting Eye Primer, $14) on lid from lash line up to brow bone. Then with a concealer brush, cover entire lid from lash line to brow bone with a neutral shadow (Sephora Collection Beauty in a Box Natural Eye Tutorial; $36).

Step 3: Line - Trace around your entire eye, close to the lash line, with black waterproof eyeliner (Sephora Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner in black, $12)

Step 4: Refine - With a black liquid liner, draw a thin line across your upper lash line, tailing it out at the end for extra definition and a winged effect. Finish with mascara.

Model: Miss Hawaii Jalee Fuselier

Smoky Eye Express Service

Step 1: Prime - Pat eye primer (Sephora Collection Perfecting Eye Primer, $14) on lid from lash line up to brow bone and directly under eye.

Step 2: Line - Trace around your entire lid with cream eyeliner (Sephora Collection Smoky Waterproof Cream Eyeliner, $10), concentrating color on the lid, along lash line.

Step 3: Define - Using a tapered brush, apply a deep shadow (Sephora Collection Beauty In a Box Smoky Eyes Palette, $36) over the cream eyeliner on your top lid, blending well to smudge the color.

Step 4: Refine - Line the inner rim of your lower lash line with a waterproof eye liner (Sephora Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner in black, $12).

Step 5: Curl eyelashes (Sephora Eyelash Curler, $16), and finish with mascara (Sephora Collection Advanced Lash Booster, $17).

Step 1: Prime - Apply eye cream (Fresh Lotus Eye Gel, $48), and follow with eye primer (Sephora Collection Perfecting Eye Primer, $14) from the lash line to the brow bone and under the lower lash line to help provide a base for the shadow to adhere, blend easier and promote longevity of look.

Step 2: Shine - Using a large eye shadow brush (Sephora Collection IT Medium Shader-Natural Brush, $20), press into the eye shadow (Sephora Collection Endless Color Blockbuster, $48, used the green and neutral colors to create look) to lift the powder. Invert the brush with bristles facing the lash line then press in small controlled motions to highlight the center of the eye and blend out over the entire lid.

Step 3: Line - Line the upper lash line with a waterproof eyeliner (Sephora Waterproof Smoky Cream Liner in Grass is Greener, $10) starting out thin near the inner corner of the eye and thicker as you progress to the outer corner. After working in the fashion and jewelry industry in New York City for about eight years, Farida Ong decided to return home last year and start something new.

She created Fishloaves, an online boutique offering fashions that are “easy, breathable, different and most importantly inexpensive.”

“Fishloaves is not a Christian bakery, though I came up with the name because I was inspired by the miracle of two fish and five loaves, and I just think it’s encouraging and it’s such a positive story,” says Ong, who has lived in Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

A Fishloaves store is located at the Samsung Plaza on Keeaumoku Street but will be moving out at the end of this month.

So now, Ong is in search of a “new fishbowl,” but in the meantime will continue to run her business online.

Within five months, Ong says she has garnered close to 400 followers on her Fishloaves Inc Facebook page which also has a “shop now” section.

“I have fans worldwide,” she says. “In fact, one of my customers placed an order all the way from France.”

A Touch Of Estrellita

Wednesday - September 01, 2010

Estrellita “Estelle” Green started sewing at age 9. Now, at “forever 29,” she continues to make her own clothes, A Touch of Estrellita, which is described as sexy, glamourous, elegant and one-of-a-kind. She sketches, designs and sews all of her garments, and also is a talented artist in oil painting and an interior designer.

“My goal (with designing clothes) is to express the beauty of being a confident woman, while not being afraid to show what sexy yet classy can look like,” she says.

A graduate of Roosevelt High School and a former Miss Hawaii Filipina, Green started sewing her own clothing to help with family expenses, as her mom was left raising seven children alone after their father passed away while the children were still young. At age 13, she became a Polynesian dancer, worked at Kaiser Village (now known as Hilton Hawaiian Village), and appeared in TV and films including Gidget Goes Hawaiian, Hawaii, Hawaiian Eye and Hawaii Five-0. She also was cast as a hula dancer in Elvis Presley’s movies filmed in Hawaii, and lived in Hollywood and Las Vegas, where she designed costumes for various Las Vegas entertainers and met her husband of 32 years, Honolulu attorney Michael Green. “You will never see it anywhere else,” says Green of what makes her designs so unique.

“It’s Estelle with a touch of Hollywood, Hawaii and Vegas all sewn into a garment!”

Introducing Hi State Of Mind

Katrina Bodnyk

Katrina “Katie” Bodnyk moved to Hawaii from a small town in Indiana in 2000 to attend Hawaii Pacific University, study marine biology and learn how to surf. But after about a year, she realized she wanted to do something more creative and transferred to the University of Hawaii and enrolled in its Apparel Product Design and Merchandising program.

She graduated in 2005 and launched HI State of Mind, a “hippie chic” clothing line with each garment made out of recycled fabric to create a one-of-a-kind item for her customers.

“I used to collect vintage clothing in high school because there wasn’t much else to do in Indiana and there are lots of great thrift shops on the Mainland,” says Bodnyk, 28 and recently married (to Aaron Langford). “After moving to Hawaii, I continued my hobby as a ‘picker’ and came across an abundance of second-hand scarves with cool retro prints and colors that I was instantly attracted to.”

HI State of Mind can be found at Le Grand Marqet in Ala Moana Center and Yoganics Hawaii on the Big Island. Bodnyk also recently started a jewelry collection combining vintage jewelry with leftover scarves.

HOUSE OF ARIA

Wednesday - August 11, 2010

House of Aria was launched earlier this year as a traveling boutique, with shows at various events around town. But due to a growing clientele base, owner Melody Domingo decided it was time for a permanent location and recently opened at Waiau Center in Pearl City.

“I felt that the Leeward area was being under-served in women’s boutiques, being that most of the local women’s boutiques are in town,” says Domingo. “Coming from Ewa Beach and with the rising cost of fuel, commuting into town was becoming an issue. I wanted to offer fashionistas from the Leeward area another alternative, and because we are located in Pearl City, we are able to offer our clientele lower prices compared to other boutiques.”

The store carries a variety of women’s fashions such as comfortable rompers, cocktail dresses and billowy tunics, as well as fashion jewelry, handbags and belts. Brands include Wildfox, Collective Clothing, Audrey 3+1, Final Touch, Everly, Naked Zebra, local designers Indah and Ginger13, and KOI designer scrubs.

“I also work as an RN, so I wanted to incorporate (the KOI designer scrubs) into the shop,” says Domingo. “I wanted a boutique where healthcare professionals could shop for fashionable scrubs for work and also cute clothing to go out with.”

Fashionistas also can check out House of Aria at Off The Rack at Pearl Ultra Lounge Aug. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m.

House of Aria is located at 98-450 Kamehameha Hwy., Suite 3. For more information, visit houseofaria.net or call 626-5982.

Olive Boutique In Kailua

Wednesday - August 04, 2010

Ali McMahon is living a dream come true. When she was 7, she already knew she wanted to own a clothing store. Twenty-five years later, she opened Olive Boutique in Kailua, which she describes as stylish, effortless and inspired.

The store offers “beach chic essentials” by designers Ella Moss, Bobi, Indah, Free People, We the Free, Aude, Saint Grace and more. It also carries Kai fragrance products and one-of-a-kind creations by jo.jah.jae and Devin Krista Jewelry.

Raised in Kailua, McMahon moved to California at 19 and then to Seattle to pursue her dream in fashion. She earned a degree in fashion marketing from the Art Institute of Seattle, worked in retail as a visual merchandiser for Banana Republic, and then free-lanced for various luxury retailers, including St. John, Escada, Gucci and Chanel. At the time, she thought about opening a store in Seattle, but her heart was in buying comfortable summer clothing fit for a beach lifestyle, and her goal was to move back home to Kailua and open a boutique.

“I wanted to buy and sell clothing I was passionate about and something I knew about,” she says. “My goal is to buy clothing that has a delicate balance of being hip and comfortable without being over-the-top trendy; clothing that will stay in your closet for years and not go out of style.”

The store’s name comes from McMahon’s obsession with olives and also from her favorite color green. Olive Boutique is located at 43 Kihapai St. For more information, visit iheartolive.com or call 263-9919.

The Wedding Cafe in Ward Warehouse introduces Eden in Love, a boutique located right next door offering comfortable dresses, fun tops and great accessories.

“We still have great wedding resources and workshops at The Wedding Cafe,” says Tanna Dang (pictured here), who co-owns the business with husband Bryson. “But on the other side of our store, Eden in Love, focuses on bringing cute, stylish clothes and accessories to our shoppers.

“We opened it to create a clear distinction between our growing wedding resource center and boutique. Both sides of our business have grown organically with the support of each other. Our boutique and resource center share the same client - women. Women shop and women get married. It was the perfect ‘marriage,’ you could say. Our boutique allowed us to close the gap with our customer and create a circle of retention.”

In addition to housing some of L.A.‘s most popular brands, such as Final Touch, Everly and Lush, Eden in Love also hosts monthly events to benefit the community. Next month, the store will sponsor an elementary classroom and will have a school supply drive. Wednesday - June 16, 2010

Jams World has opened its flagship boutique at Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki, offering the latest in its trademark colorful apparel including Original Jams from 1964 as well as surfboards, paipo boards, swim trunks and jewelry.

“Jams World is all about being different, colorful, individual and confident,” says Mark Tsuda, CEO of Surf Line Hawaii and Jams World. “The clothing stands out. It’s based on actual art pieces and therefore is stylized to be artistic.”

Surf Line Hawaii, the corporate name covering Jams World, is a family-owned business established in 1964 by David Rochlen. The company added resort leisure fashions and the Jams World brand in 1986.

Now headed by Rochlen’s son, David “Pua” Rochlen, Jams World has three stores (Royal Hawaiian Center, Shops at Mauna Lani and Ward Centre), as well as products in more than 800 stores worldwide.

“All apparel is made in spun crushed rayon, which makes the material feel like a very light cotton,” adds Tsuda. “The fabric is made in Japan, but everything is cut and sewn in Hawaii in the factory that has been in the same location for 32 years.”

The brand first became popular when it appeared in 1965 on the cover of LIFE magazine in a story about the surfing lifestyle. Since then, it has built a great following of fans, including former sumo champion Konishiki, for whom the company has been making clothing for many years.

Summer Trends At Neiman Marcus

By .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
Wednesday - June 09, 2010

Summer is here, and according to Neiman Marcus fashion director Ken Downing, some of summer’s top trends will continue into the fall making the transition between seasons effortless.

“Cargo pants are perfect for summer and give a nod to the importance of pants for fall,” explains Downing. “Cargo’s safari are chic with a wedge, sexy with a heel, or relaxed rolled up with a flat sandal.

“Also, the global groove continues with the eclectic mix of painterly prints, tie dye, ikats and batiks to add a splash of bold color to your summer looks.” Downing adds that safari details of olive green, epaulets and utility pockets transform into military influences; and safari jackets are the way to top relaxed pants, summer’s favorite shorts or leggings, and can be worn at night as the alternative evening cover up.

“Juxtapose the borrowed-from-the-boys references with flirty ruffles, flounces and chantilly lace, an important trend as we move ahead into the autumn months,” he continues. “And another nod to what’s ahead is pearls, and lots of them! Luxe layering of multiple strands, real with faux, add the feminine contrast to the masculine military. And green is the color of the fall season.”

Featured here are some of summer’s hottest looks from Neiman Marcus, photographed at the recent Junior League of Honolulu’s Sacs in the City fundraiser.

Happy Graduation! Hold On To Those Balloons!

Yu Shing Ting
By .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
Wednesday - May 19, 2010

During graduation season, Hawaiian Electric Company urges everyone to hold on to those shiny metallic balloons because all it takes is one to cause a power outage affecting thousands of customers.

“Today’s metallic balloons are more elaborate, featuring various shapes, sizes and add-on balloons, but they should always have a weight attached to the bottom of the string or ribbon,” says Kaiulani de Silva, HECO director of education and consumer affairs. “The balloon weight can be a simple plastic ornament or a fancy wrapped ball of sand, but the main purpose is to prevent the balloon from floating up and away. On top of that, consumers should check to be sure that the string or non-metallic ribbon is tied securely to the balloon knot or sealing point. These quick tips will ensure metallic balloons can’t escape into the sky.”

Safety tips from HECO:

* Always attach a small weight - such as a heavy mug, toy or bag of candy - to the end of the string or ribbon that holds the metallic balloon.

* Do not remove balloon weights until the balloon has been deflated.

* Each metallic balloon should be individually attached to a weight. Avoid tying the balloons together, which has a greater chance of rising as a cluster and becoming entangled in power lines.

* Never use metallic ribbons with helium-filled balloons; an accidental release could cause the metallic ribbon to become entangled in power lines and cause a short circuit.

* Never release metallic balloons into the sky.

* Properly dispose of metallic balloons. Cut the balloon at the knot or sealing point to deflate it and put the balloon in the trash or save it in a scrapbook.

* If a metallic balloon is caught in a power line, do not attempt to climb a utility pole or pull the string to recover it. Leave it alone and call Hawaiian Electric at 548-7961.

For more information and tips about metallic balloons, visit www.heco.com and click on “Safety and Emergency.”

Pictured here are some crafty ideas to weigh down those metallic balloons from Ben Franklin Crafts and modeled by some Moanalua High School seniors. Congratulations, graduates! And don’t forget, hold on to those balloons!

Xcel, a locally founded global wetsuit brand headquartered in Haleiwa, is using its products to help in the fight against skin cancer by donating a portion of proceeds from national sales of its UV protection gear to the University of Hawaii Cancer Research Center of Hawaii.

The partnership first started in May 2007 when Xcel launched a monthlong campaign in recognition of National Skin Cancer Awareness month. Because it was so successful, the company decided to restart its partnership with CRCH in 2009 and has since raised more than $16,000. The partnership will continue through 2010.

Xcel’s primary markets include surf, dive, wakeboard, paddle and ultraviolet sun-protective apparel. Its UV protection gear features a stretch Lycra fabric that has continuously achieved the highest possible ultraviolet protection factor rating, UPF50+, meaning the fabric blocks more than 98 percent of UVA/UVB sunrays. On Oahu, Xcel is located in Haleiwa, Ward Centre and Royal Hawaiian Center. Its products also are distributed to various authorized dealers around the world. Lilian McDonnell has always been drawn to antique shops and consignment stores, and after a couple of years of constantly thinking about having her own “high-end” consignment store, she finally decided to open Kailua Verde Boutique & Consignment last November.

“The store caters mainly to women and children, but we will accept high-end fashion for men on consignment,” explains McDonnell, who was born and raised in El Salvador. “We’re selective about what we take. Space is limited and we want to offer customers high-end products they won’t be able to find anywhere else.”

Kailua Verde Boutique keeps consigned items for 60 days, and the owner of the consigned item receives 50 percent of the profit in cash or 60 percent in store credit for fashion, and 75 percent for jewelry and crafts. Interested consignors can call 261-6190 to make an appointment.

“We try to set our prices low enough that it’s always a good deal,” adds McDonnell. “Once people discover the benefits of resale shopping, they rarely go back to paying full price again.” Kailua Verde Boutique & Consignment is located at 111 Hekili St., Suite 102 in Kailua across from Foodland.
