This week, in celebration of Earth Day (April 22), here are some earth-friendly fashion ideas available at Umeke Market.

A locally owned business, Umeke Market offers a great selection of organic/free-range groceries, local produce, cosmetics, supplements and clothing. There also is a deli and a new all-organic/natural gardening section with classes on how to start your own garden.

Its apparel department features organic clothing with a lot of style and color. Some also feature low-impact dyes, bamboo and various recycled materials such as recycled polyester. Brands include Echo Verde, InnerPeace Designs, Alternative Apparel, and SN-R-G and Under the Nile baby clothing.

The company first started in 1997 when siblings Debbie and Daryl Yamaguchi opened a small health food store called Kaimuki Health Market. In 2003, Daryl’s wife, Michelle, joined the team and they opened a bigger version of the store called Umeke Market located in Kahala (4400 Kalanianaole Hwy.). In 2008, they opened a second location in Downtown Honolulu (1001 Bishop St.).

For Earth Day, store representatives will be handing out vitamin samples and coupons at the Xerox Hawaii Earth Day event April 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tamarind Park in Downtown Honolulu. They also will have a booth at the Kokua Festival (April 23 and 24 at Waikiki Shell).
