Hui Makaala hosted its 40th annual scholarship fund luncheon and fashion show at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel featuring the designs of Kanna Yamauchi (pictured at right) under the designer name Yokang. On the runway was her newest collection, A Letter from Nirai Kanai.

“In the mythology of Okinawa, there is a belief that God lives in an island across the sea called Nirai Kanai,” says Yamauchi, who studied fashion design in Paris and Okinawa. “This God crosses the sea, bringing happiness. This legend is the inspiration behind the collection.” Coming up for Yamauchi is a fashion show in Hong Kong next year. She also recently developed a fabric using weathered coral as the raw material and premiered a wedding line earlier this year.

Yokang is available in 43 select shops throughout Japan and online at www.yokang.jp.
