When Melanie Decker Koehl was pregnant with son Caden (who just turned 2), she had a hard time finding environmentally responsible clothes, toys and baby products. So she decided to open her own store, Little Sprouts, in Kailua offering parents a great selection of eco-friendly merchandise.

“I want parents to know more about the products they purchase,” says Koehl, who also works as a graphic designer. “For example, ordinary cotton is the most pesticide-dependent crop in the world and accounts for 25 percent of all pesticide use. When we buy organic, it not only helps our environment, but it ensures that what touches our keiki’s skin is as free of chemicals as possible.”

Little Sprouts first opened in August 2008 at a temporary location in Kailua before recently relocating to its permanent space in the Kailua Shopping Center (600 Kailua Road).

The store carries various products from more than 80 vendors, including Aden + Anais swaddle blankets, Baby Bjorn carriers, Bebe au lait organic nursing covers, Bumkins cloth diapers, Erbaviva organic skin care, Fleurville recycled diaper bags, Green to Grow PVC-free baby bottles, Green Toys, Kate Quinn Luxury organic clothing, Klean Kanteen, Little Twig bath & body, Melissa & Doug, Moby Wrap, Sama Baby Organics, Scout Organics, Sustainable Kids, Under the Nile and See Kai Run shoes.

Decker Koehl also sells her own line of children’s designs, all printed on organic clothing.
