How did you get your start in music? With help. I was a big Hapa fan in high school. Barry Flanagan agreed to give me guitar lessons, and I was hooked. I received lots of help along the way from people like Bobby Moderow (Maunalua), Andy Wang (taropatch.net), Danny Kaleikini, Ozzie Kotani, Jeff Peterson, Randy Hongo,Nathan Aweau, the KoAloha family. I’m sure I forgot a bunch of people. It’s really amazing how people in the Hawaii music community are continuously kind and giving.

What are your musical accomplishments?

Releasing two albums, playing at Carnegie, but most of all, finding a way to add value to people’s lives through music. I received a review on www.amazon.com a few months ago from a woman who purchased my music online. She played my CD for her mother, who was in the hospital. The music helped her mother relax and to imagine she was somewhere else. That’s the power of music.

How would you describe your music? Relaxing, soothing. My latest album, Five Years and Many Miles, is Sunday morning music.

What projects are you working on currently?

I’m spending a lot of time promoting the new album,FiveYears and Many Miles. I did an online release in June, but the full release is still in the works. You can find the CD at www.cdbaby.com/leong2

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

I love local music, and instrumental guitar in particular. I also love some bands and artists who are slightly outside the mainstream, like Tommy Emmanuel (finger-style guitarist), Nickel Creek (new bluegrass) and Chris Thile (mandolin).

Any ongoing or upcoming gigs? I’ll be performing at the Kauai Music Festival on Friday, Aug. 3.
