On the shores of Waimanalo Beach Park, dozens of local musicians will gather next Saturday (Aug. 9) for the annual Gabby Pahinui Waimanalo Kanikapila.

Paying tribute to the slack-key legend, the concert provides an experience of which Gabby would be proud. A true mentor of the craft, Gabby was renowned for teaching and sharing his music with anyone who wanted to listen and learn.

During the 1970s, Gabby would have kanikapila sessions at his namesake Waimanalo Beach Park pavilion. After his passing, it has long been the dream of the Pahinui ohana to re-establish these musical gatherings to recognize Gabby’s contribution at the building dedicated in his honor and to everything he stood for.

This concert allows an up-close, backyard-style experience of Hawaii’s traditions, including kiho’alu (slack key), traditional Hawaiian music, hula, storytelling and other cultural activities.

Performing at this one-of-a-kind kanikapila are: Pahinui Hawaiian Band, Pali, Jessie Kalima Ohana, Aunty Genoa Keawe Ohana, Jerry Santos, Melveen Leed, Robi Kahakalau, Makana, Ben Kaili and Kanakapila, Palani Vaughn and the King’s Own, Makaha Sons, Dennis and David Kamakahi, Kaua, Hukipau, George Kuo, Martin Pahinui and Aaron Mahi,Sonny Lim,David Kahiapo,Dwight Hanohano and Del Beazley, Brother Nolan and Friends, Nina Kealiiwahamana, Kuuipo Kumukahi, Pali, Owana Salazar and Bill Kaiwa.Emcees are Skylark Rosetti and Kimo Kahoano.
