Ignace Jang

Aka: Iggy

Age: 37

Hometown: Parents still live in my home-town, which is Grenoble, France. I’m of Korean descent, but parents moved to France in the ‘60s.

Musical occupation: Officially it’s concertmaster with the Honolulu Symphony (the violinist who sits first chair in the orchestra). Also a lecturer at UH-Manoa.

Musical accomplishments? Graduated from the Paris Conservatory at the tender age of 15. I was a prize-winner at international competitions in Italy and France, I traveled from Europe to Asia to America to perform. Concertmaster of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra since 1997 and currently a faculty member at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the Brigham Young-Hawaii University, and teach chamber music at the Punahou School and the Hawaii Youth Symphony. I was the grand prize winner at the 1989 Rodolfo Lipizer International Violin Competition, where I was also the recipient of the Jury’s Special Prize for outstanding musical personality. I also won prizes at the Lion’s Club of France Violin Competition and the Eastern Music Festival.

How did you get your start in music? Older brother and sister played piano, and mom would play recordings of violin music on the turntable. When the parents asked if I wanted to learn the piano like the siblings, I said I prefer the violin. Next thing I know, dad comes back from work one evening with a 1/8-size violin. I was 5.

Upcoming performances/gigs? Regular gigs with the Honolulu Symphony; it starts again in August. Outside the symphony, performances with the Hilo Chamber Music Festival, then teaching at the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival in Waimea, then a performance of the Brahms Double Concerto at the Britt Festivals in Jacksonville, Ore.

Most memorable musical moment? Many, but the most recent is how I noticed the lyricism of Hawaiian singers from The Brothers Caz to Kealii Reichel. I try to implement this lyricism in my playing.
