Jessie Domingo

Age: 26

Hometown: Currently residing in the traffic capital of Hawaii, Ewa Beach.

Occupation: I wear many hats. I’m currently a full-time graduate student at HPU and the editor-in-chief/head writer/photographer for atypicalLIVING.

Can you describe what the company you work for does?

atypicalLIVING was started by myself in 2005 as an outlet for artists in Hawaii. Up until then, there were few outlets where Hawaii-based artists could turn to get exposure for things they were doing, outside of the print media. atypicalLIVING set out to change that, providing a needed platform for Hawaii-based artists to showcase their work online. We’ve since branched out to helping promote local events and highlighting local designers and clothing brands. Our main goal is to show people outside of Hawaii that, hey, there’s a true underground scene going on here. My friend and business partner, Lofa, handles the promotions side of atypicalLIVING, making contacts with artists that are coming to Hawaii. We’ve made contacts on the Mainland who have forwarded our site to those wondering what’s hot in Hawaii with fashion, art and music.

What is the best part about you job?

The best part of my job is the variety of people I come in contact with at every function we cover. Through these relationships, we’ve been able to help those looking for exposure get into the limelight, so to speak. It’s a very satisfying feeling to know that our success as a media outlet is helping Hawaii’s very talented artists find exposure and success as well.

Who’s your favorite music artist you’ve worked with?

For me personally, my heart has always been in the local hip-hop scene since the first time I stumbled onto Kavet The Catalyst’s groundbreaking hip-hop program “the lightsleepers show” on KTUH in 1998. Since launching the site, it’s been interesting meeting all these artists you’ve only heard of on the radio and placing a face to the many emcee names out there. So, to answer the question, everyone who’s been involved with lightsleepers over the past almost 10 years has been a joy to work with.

What is the hottest underground spot right now in Hawaii?

I am pretty partial to thirtyninehotel. I just find something very organic and comfortable about a big room up a flight of stairs that also leads out to a rooftop lanai.
