Kenneth Makuakane

High School graduated: Kamehameha

Hometown: Keaukaha in Hilo

Musical occupation: Record producer, recording engineer, artist, songwriter, arranger, director.

How did you get your start in music? I was in Concert Glee, a select choir at Kamehameha Schools. I was in a band, along with Brickwood Galuteria. We won a statewide competition that was the predecessor to Brown Bags To Stardom and gained the attention of a lot of people. We spent every school holiday on the road, playing in a whole bunch of places across the nation and Canada. We even did Puerto Rico, Europe and anywhere an airplane could fly.

Musical accomplishments?

This is my bio: Kenneth Makuakane is recognized as a successful innovator in producing and recording Hawaiian music. He has more than 100 albums to his producing credits. He performs with the multiaward-winning group The Pandanus Club, composing, engineering and producing each release. A prolific songwriter, Kenneth’s compositions have been recorded by local artists like the Brothers Cazimero, Na Leo, Kapena, the Pandanus Club, Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom, Loyal Garner and Gary Haleamau. He produced a track on Kenny Loggins 2000 CD release, More Songs from Pooh Corner. And his music has been on the soundtrack of major films like Honeymoon In Las Vegas and Parent Trap In Paradise. He has received a total of 11 Na Hoku Hanohano awards. He has been recognized in the National Registry of Who’s Who and was also inducted into the Kamehameha Schools Alumni Gallery Hall of Fame. Kenneth owns and operates his own private recording studio in Kailua.

How many records have you done?

I’ve recorded 20 albums as a member of several groups, as well as a solo artist.

Any ongoing/upcoming gigs?

I just got off a three-week tour through the West Coast. I am doing some private gigs and summer music festivals around the Islands. I am now putting together a fall touring schedule. You can go to my website for performance updates, as well as other information, www.makuakane.com
