MICHAEL ADACHI

Aka: DJ Mike D (and Johnny Quazi)

Age: 26 in June

Hometown: Born and raised in Nanakuli, but I call Salt Lake home now.

High school: Aiea,class of 2000.

Musical occupation? Production manager for Cox Radio Hawaii, professional remixer and on-air and nightclub DJ. Oh, and I promote here and there.

How did you get into the music business? My first insight into “I like music” was in sixth grade. In grade school I used to listen to mix shows on the radio ... James Coles “In the Mix” and all that. I actually remember telling my art teacher in high school that one day I would work with (Coles). Now my office is right next door. Funny how things work out. In high school I started to dabble in sound editing software and learned I really enjoyed messing with music. I started working with Mystical Sounds Productions back in ‘97 doing mobile disco. It had its backbreaking moments, but was a really good experience, especially for music knowledge.

My first club gig was actually at 1739’s in 2000. It was quite the experience. I was homeless at the time and was staying with friends - my parents were going through a rough time. Between working at Pizza Hut and 17’s, I scraped enough to survive. My first in a series of breaks came at a private party to be held at a new club called The Maze. I spun there for about a year, and actually got scouted by Artist’s Groove Network to work downstairs at Zanzabar. That’s where I met James Coles, Rick Rock, DJ Frankie and many others who helped shape my career.

My first radio gig is here. It came up one night at Zanzabar that I could do production, and James asked if I would be interested. From there I started working here, and that’s kinda that! And I have been on the grind since!

Where can you be seen?At night, Fridays and Sundays at Zanzabar nightclub, Saturday nights at Pearl Ultralounge and The Rock Bar, Mondays at Moonlight Mondays at Aiea Bowl, and Wednesdays hosting at Fashion 45 for Wild Wednesdays. During the weekday, they keep me locked up here at Cox Radio. (laughs)
