Andrew, Gay and Randy Hongo

Hometown: Randy was born in Hilo. Gay was born in Tokyo, but came to Hawaii when she was 6 years old and was raised in Waipahu. Son Andrew was born in Louisville, Ky.

Musical occupation: Gay and I are full-time musicians through our ministry called Christian Vision. We present concerts throughout Hawaii and around the world. Andrew has been doing missionary work in Asia for the past few years, and has been home in Hawaii this year. Whenever he is home with us he takes an active part in the family music work and sings and travels with us. In essence, we are traveling musicians and present our musical programs primarily in churches, but also in schools, nursing homes, prisons, detention homes and for private gatherings.

Musical accomplishments: We’ve traveled throughout the world, sharing our music and the Lord’s Gospel. We’ve been to Japan (19 times), Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Australia, England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and most of the contiguous United States throughout our 25 years of singing together. We have recorded 15 albums, six of which have won the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for Best Religious Album of the Year: Lord of the Islands, When Two Become One, Together Forever, In His Time, Home Is with the Father and God Is in Control.

What is Christian Vision? Christian Vision is a non-profit organization that was formed to allow friends and family to support our music work through private donations - people receive tax deductions as they give us donations and contributions for our services.

When did you start the music foundation? Christian Vision was started back in August 1982, so we are celebrating our 25th anniversary this month. Christian Vision is now wanting to expand and build a music training center, hopefully to be called the Hongo Music Center. We’ve been raising funds for this center since December 2000 and will continue to do so until we reach our goal.

Upcoming events: Our big upcoming event is our 25th Anniversary Celebration Fundraiser to be held on Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Pacific Beach Hotel Grand Ballroom. Doors open at 10:30 a.m., lunch is served at 11:30, and the program starts at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person, and sponsor tables are available. For more information, please call 842-0878.
