Besides great shopping and dining, Waikiki Beach Walk also offers great music. And it’s free!

At its recently announced Sunday Showcase, a blend of musicians take to the Plaza stage every Sunday from 5 to 6 p.m. to share sounds of Hawaii, from traditional Hawaiian to contemporary Island beats to hapa-haole favorites.

The lineup for May begins May 4 with Ekolu Mele. The group features the falsetto stylings of Duanne Laanui (winner of

Maui’s Brown Bags to Stardom), Teve Tolentino and steel guitarist Derrick Mau. Joining them on stage are hula soloists Mona Yamada and Malama Iwaliko.

On May 11, the young ladies of MighTy J will share their free-spirited spin on Island music that’s as unique as their personalities. Members Mailani Makainai (of Keahiwai), Tiki Suan (of Milo Shade) and Jenn “JROQ"Wright (of Kanalo and Simple Souls) have bonded through their passion for music and similar music group backgrounds.

Paul Shimomoto, the 2003 winner of the first Hapa Haole Music Festival vocal competition, is on the bill for May 18. The Iolani graduate has been a member of a bunch of doo-wop a cappella groups over the years and the lead vocalist in a local Hawaiian music group.

And capping off the month (May 25) is Traci Toguchi. The former Miss Hawaii has experienced the bright lights of Broadway as a cast member of Miss Saigon and has sung the national anthem on ESPN live. As a song-writer, Traci has authored and composed numerous pop, rock, soul songs with influences of adult contemporary, gospel and Island genres.

The Sunday Showcase is a new component of the Hawaiian music heritage program Na Mele No Na Pua - Music for the Generations, a collaborative effort by Outrigger Enterprises Group, the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame and the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts.
