Taharba Essadi

Aka: D.J. Sovern-T

Age: Gettin’ up there

Hometown: Paterson, N.J./San Diego/ Hawaii ... equally

High school graduated from: Bible Missionary Fellowship Independent Baptist High School (really)

Musical occupation: Events coordinator and wireless dance floor puppeteer

How did you get into music/deejaying?

When I was about 14 my friends and I were really into popping and locking (a form of break dancing) and eventually I started hanging around the deejays that played the music we danced to. My sorta hanai uncle, Terry, had two Technic turntables and a bass guitar in his basement, and us few kids who were trying to stay out of trouble hung out there. That’s where it took root.

Where can you be spotted?

I don’t actually go out too much except when working, but you can be sure to see me at Indigo on Friday nights, some double-o-spot parties, shopping for veggies at the downtown farmers’ market on Tuesdays and Fridays, and at the gym a couple of times a week.

Any upcoming gigs/performances?

I play every Friday at Get Fresh (Indigo), every first Thursday at Redda Fire, some events lined up for Che Pasta this fall and at the end of September I’ll be in Abuja, Nigeria (Africa), playing and promoting an event for Nigerian Independence Day. It’s a long story.

What’s your favorite genre to listen to?

Depends on where I am. A lot of reggae, jazz, jungle/d&b and old school hip-hop.

What’s your biggest musical accomplishment?

Learning how to listen to it.

Who is your music icon?

If Fela Kuti, Miles Davis, Celia Cruz and KRS ONE somehow formed offspring, it would probably be her.
