How did you get into the music business?

While in high school my first professional job was working in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., at a Hawaiian theme park called Porpoise Island. My first job in Hawaii was working at the Al Makahinu Show in the Hula Hut. I graduated and moved to the Mainland, where I earned a degree in music. I’ve worked and traveled all over the world.

What is your fondest musical memory?

There are too many to mention. Performing in Carnegie Hall with my own group, playing my original music, singing Hawaiian songs for my tutu for her 88th birthday, playing every Sunday at Unity Church.Whatever opens the hearts and minds and promotes raising the consciousness of humanity. It’s on my web-site.

Who are your music icons?

Anyone who has survived making music for a living. The dedication, passion, sacrifice and perseverance needed to survive in the business is impressive to me.

What is your biggest musical accomplishment?

Being able to make music my life’s dream and see people have an emotional and spiritual healing from that experience. Creating a musical ministry, if you will.

What is your favorite genre of music to listen to?

Jazz.Actually, any music that’s played by skillful, creative humans - not machines.

Where do you like to listen to live music?

My house when my friends come over to jam.

Who is your favorite local musician?

It’s a tie! Matt Catingub, Dean Taba, Noel Okimoto,Gabe Baltazar,Shawn Ishimoto,Abe Lagrimas Jr., Tennyson Stephens, David Swanson, DeShannon Higa, Nathan Aweau, Barry Flanagan, Benny Chong, Cookie Among, Sam Ahia, Michael Ruff, Ohta-San, Lyle Ritz, Jerry Byrd, Bobby Larson, Danny Otholt, Hiram Olson and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. They’re all so uniquely gifted and do amazing musical things that I can’t even imagine doing. They’re simply the best Hawaii has to offer in consummate musicianship and professionalism.
