Neil Sedaka wowed ‘em on Maui, Honolulu and Kauai.
It’s amazing that his voice is as pure as it was when he first performed here more than 50 years ago! He’s written so many hits and still loves the art of songwriting so when we parked at the airport last Sunday on our way to the Garden Island, I asked Neil to remember where we left the car Area 3-B and darned if he didn’t write a song about it. When we returned from Kauai that evening and entered the parking lot, Neil began singing a beautiful song with 3-B in the lyrics ...

ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS of this year’s Hawaii International Film Festival was the gathering of some of the cast of Hawaii Five-0 before an audience of festival supporters at Halekulani Hotel. The festival awarded the show’s executive producer Peter Lenkov with this year’s Mahalo award. And when star Alex O’Loughlin was asked about the reaction to Five-0 in his native Australia, he replied “Well, my mom watches it” ...
Spotted: a very fit Paul Blackthorne running up the Makapu’u Lighthouse trail. He’s keeping in shape for his role in The River, an ABC television adventure-mystery set in the Amazon jungle. This week in 1968: Tommy Sands and Polynesia 68 open a new showroom†at outrigger Hotel. After moving here from Hollywood, Tommy asked Eddie Sherman and me to find him a place to perform in Waikiki.
Every club was booked, so we converted a meeting room into a nightclub with the help of Doc Kelley and Mick Hickey, and named the new venue the main showroom. Tommy performs three shows a night. Dave Donnelly writes in the June 25, 1968, Star-Bulletin: “Bursting back into the entertainment seat like a comet, Tommy sands cast a spell on capacity crowds all weekend at the outrigger’s new showroom. The hourlong show is well-paced, excellently lighted and well-microphoned. Preceding sands on the show are Sweetie Moffatt and Rosemary Alvaro breezing through a fast hula, slow hula and Tahitian dance.” Fun fact: Jack “Tihati” Thompson is a member of Polynesia 68 ... This week in 1981: Johnny Cash and family perform two nights in the Hawaii Ballroom of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. tickets: $12.50. on the second night, Johnny’s manager Lou Robin discovers that one of their party can’t go with the rest of the group to Australia for a series of concerts. Lou, a good friend, asks if I’d like to come along instead.I jump at the opportunity and the next day off we go! during our layover at Auckland airport, most of the group goes shopping while I elect to hang out at a coffee shop with Johnny and a couple of his musicians.†I’ll never forget the story he tells†of his first visit to new Zealand: Johnny’s host took him to a well-known pub on the outskirts of Auckland. Word of his visit spread quickly, and a local farmer in the neighborhood, who had named his horse after the country music superstar, leapt at the chance to introduce it to its namesake. WHEN K-POI signed on as Hawaii’s first rock station in 1959, perhaps its biggest fan was Robert Nagaoka, the expert on everything K-POI. Record collectors, artists like Teddy Randazzo and former Poi Boys gathered at Robert’s Kaneohe home to talk story and behold his huge record collection and studio. A 1974 grad of Kaimuki High, he joined TheBus in 1976, first as a driver and in recent years as an executive. Robert, who passed away March 6, will be remembered by all who knew him ...

I HAD A GREAT TIME dining with Maui boy Shane Victorino and a few close pals at Alan Wong‘s last week. He was in town for his annual dinner and golf tournament fundraiser for the Shane Victorino Foundation. The baseball pro is a star in the true sense of the word and the real deal. It was the first time I’ve ever seen the limo driver invited to join in on dinner rather than wait outside in the car. Shane is not only a credit to baseball, but also to Hawaii.
