Buddy Miles' phone message
Buddy Miles’ phone message

I WAS SADDENED to hear that Buddy Miles died just recently at his home in Austin, Texas. When Eric Clapton heard the news, he included Buddy’s composition, Them Changes, in his concert set list.

The hotel phone message at right from Buddy resulted in a historic concert event in Hawaii. I was in San Francisco on a business trip, and Buddy asked me to meet with his manager, Santana’s manager and Carlos Santana that night at the Santana home in Mill Valley. It was agreed that night that Buddy and Santana would come to Hawaii and perform for free at the Sunshine Music Festival New Year’s Day in Diamond Head Crater. Admission was free ... and the 80,000-plus who came that day had no idea what they would witness, as we kept their appearance a secret. What a surprise when the music began. Fortunately, it was recorded for posterity by Columbia Records. My two favorite selections from the album: Evil Ways and Them Changes ...

Fun Fact: In 1970, drummer Buddy was high on the U.S. record charts (No. 5) as a member of Jimi Hendrix‘s Band of Gypsies.

The TV commercial for Kohl’s (a Mainland chain of stores) seen on American Idol includes a brief scene showing four women with their skirts blowing in the wind. Look closely ... no, not at the skirts! It’s our own Pali Lookout ...

A 44-year-old kayaking and canoodling John Stamos was seen on Maui with a mystery woman ... some sources believe she is country star Danielle Peck. Have Mercy!

This week in 1959: Hawaii celebrates STATEHOOD. There is a big celebration show at Honolulu Stadium that runs for five hours and attracts a crowd of 30,000. I emcee along with Ron Jacobs, Eddie Sherman, Ed Sheehan and Jimmy Walker. Performers include Robin Luke, Ronnie Diamond, The Royal Drifters, Darlene Yoshimoto and Dick Jensen & His Uniques. Before the show, Father John McDonald of St. Catherine’s Church calls and asks me to bring as many of the performers as possible for a celebration that night on Kauai, so following the show a chartered National Guard Aircraft takes a planeload of local talent to the Garden Island for one heck of a show ...

A new group breaking out this week with their first hit single ...The Skyliners with Since I Don’t Have You ...
