HOT LIKE FIYA, it’s Mariah ...

Mariah Carey is filming her upcoming music video in Hawaii. Wonder if her new hubby Nick Cannon is here catching some rays too ...

Happy for Loretta Ables for the accolades she’s receiving as Bloody Mary in Rodgers & Hammerstein‘s South Pacific on Broadway. I was partners with The Beamers in the Ocean Showroom at the Reef Hotel in 1981 when Loretta was our cashier. Her first break in show biz could have been the night when Keola and Kapono invited her on stage to sing and the audience responded with a memorable ovation ...

A Bloody Mary and a Margarita: It wasn’t long after that I was with Jimmy Buffett in Bora Bora after his first Tahiti concert in Papeete in 1982. We were invited to dinner at Bloody Mary’s, and afterward our genial host asked us to stay behind, as he had a surprise. After the other customers had left, he brought out a 16mm projector and showed us South Pacific in its entirety. Seeing the movie’s vibrant Kauai scenery, including the mythical Bali Hai, while sitting there amidst the similar beauty of Bora Bora is something that I will never forget ...

Movie buffs got a treat when the long-lost film Stolen Moments starring Rudolph Valentino was screened recently at the Doris Duke Theatre ...

Fun Fact: Doris Duke purchased Valentino’s famous Beverly Hills home, Falcon’s Lair, and often stayed there when not in residence at her Diamond Head estate, Shangri-La.

Free gas for a year! Enter to win this weekend at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. It’s the 31st annual Home, Garden and New Products Show showcasing the latest concepts in home and garden designs, food from the Taste of the Pacific and local stars like Karen Keawehawaii, Sonya Mendez and former Miss Hawaii USA 2003 Alicia Michioka-Jones ...

Singer Johnny Tillotson remembers Bo Diddley in my book Showman of the Pacific ... After they appeared at the Show of Stars in the Civic Auditorium in 1960, we had an after-show party at the Hawaiian Village. Bo’s maraca player put a frog in the party’s punch bowl, and when Johnny brought Bo over to enjoy a glass of punch, the frog jumped out and landed on his shoulder. Even Bo had a good laugh afterward. I was very sad to hear of Bo Diddley’s passing last week ...

This week in 1998, Olympic Gold Medalist Kristi Yamaguchi headlines Stars On Ice at the Blaisdell Arena ...

The No. 1 record in Hawaii is This Guy’s In Love With You by Herb Alpert ...
