SHEP GORDON AND MARK ELLMAN had one of the top New Year’s Eve shows anywhere at their new Mala restaurant in Wailea. Starting off with the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band ... then Alice Cooper featuring Iron Maiden guitarist Dave Murray. And how about a set by Nickelback‘s Chad and Mike Kroger? And if that wasn’t enough, joining in this musical celebration ... Michael Bolton and Carlos Santana ... Happy 2009!
Hawaii’s Nicole Scherzinger is home for the holidays before heading out for two big-time tours with the Pussycat Dolls. First off, a 12-city U.K. tour beginning in Aberdeen, Scotland, Jan. 18 through Feb. 6 in Liverpool, where she’ll probably meet up with British Formula One race car driver Lewis Hamilton, with whom she has been romantically linked. Then the Dolls are headed for four days in Germany before joining Britney Spears on a 31-city, North American tour that begins March 3 in New Orleans.
Fun Fact: Woody Harrelson and his longtime love Laura Louie tied the knot on Maui. The newlyweds refer to their three daughters, Deni Montana, Zoe Giordano and Makani Ravello, as their “goddess trilogy.”
Because of the recent blackout, Hawaiian Telcom extends its Free Phone program through the end of February. “When the power went out on Dec. 26, most other phone services could not operate, but customers with Hawaiian Telcom’s reliable land-line service and a corded phone could continue to reach emergency services and loved ones,” says Craig Inouye, senior vice president.
Nicole Richie and Joel Madden were seen on our beaches over the holidays. Nicole tried some paddle boarding and kayaking, but the two mainly lounged and soaked up some rays.
This week in 1989: Because of the great success they had the previous year, The Beach Boys return to perform the Hula Bowl. Again, we have to bring in a stage on wheels so The Beach Boys can begin performing immediately following the game. This time Brian Wilson joins them.They play their greatest hits, including Kokomo, which a few weeks before had reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard.
Fun fact: The last No. 1 hit by The Beach Boys was Good Vibrations ... 22 years before.
