That would be the case if lovely Sheri Canopin, the reigning Miss VIP and host of OC16’s Flavors of Technology, wins the title at this Friday evening’s Miss Hawaii Scholarship Competition at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. She’s got beauty, brains and a badge - as one of Honolulu’s finest ...

Al and Charlyn Masini are among the most gracious hosts I’ve ever known. I spent a terrific afternoon at their home recently along with KGMB general manager Rick Blangiardi, news anchors Kim Gennaula and Guy Hagi, singer Jimmy Borges, state film commissioner Donnie Dawson, and New York Times best-selling author Dr. Spencer Johnson (One Minute Manager and Who Moved My Cheese?) and his wife Leslie. Though the surroundings were opulent and the view was to die for, what I really remembered the next day was the great company and the fun conversation ...

Pals of Punahou head tennis coach Rusty Komori celebrated his being named high school coach of the year at last week’s Bitchen Kitchen affair at Sam Choy‘s Kapahulu restaurant. (Coach Rusty helps promote the monthly event.) On hand to celebrate was Lost castmember Daniel Dae Kim, one of Rusty’s private students. This year’s 13th consecutive state championship puts Rusty right behind St. Louis football coach Cal Lee in number of championships won. Cal has 14 wins under his belt ...

Now that he’s home, Jordan’s getting set to perform at the Miss Hawaii Scholarship Competition and rehearsing for his role in the upcoming Louis Vuitton/HOT production of The King and I. Manager Nancy Bernal notes that the autograph session lasted about as long as the show, clocking in at 1 1/2 hours ...

You have until next Sunday to visit the exhibit of David Kuraoka‘s recent works at the Holt Gallery of Honolulu Academy of Arts. Kuraoka, a state living treasure, creates some of the most intriguing art I’ve ever seen ...

This week in 1975: It was a real thrill to present an NBA all-star game at the Blaisdell Arena featuring future Hall of Famers like: Dave Cowens (Boston Celtics), Calvin Murphy (Houston Rockets), Bill Bradley (New York Knicks, later a U.S. senator), and Coach Red Auerbach (Boston Celtics). The No. 1 hit in Hawaii was Neil Sedaka‘s composition Love Will Keep Us Together by The Captain & Tennille.
