FROM the ex-Islander files: Former island gal Keala Friel, niece of the late carnival king Kane Fernandez, writes from her home in Hermosa Beach that neighbor Christopher Knight (better known as the Bunch’s Peter Brady) is now shooting the second season of My Fair Brady for VH-1. Her suggestion to fans of the first season: Get ready for the wedding ...

Another former Honoluluan Willy Falk (Les Miserables, Miss Saigon) just had double hip replacement - he’s doing well and recuperating at his home in New York City ...

Al Harrington is on his way home to enter the political realm to make a bid for Ed Case‘s Congressional seat…

Back at home: I’m not naming names, but a prominent local businessman from Japan, still learning English, bet a sizeable sum in Las Vegas on his favorite Seattle Seahawks to win the Super Bowl. In the closing minutes of the game our friend was about to tear up his ticket when it was noticed that his bet had inadvertently been placed on Pittsburgh ...

The scene at Kelly Slater‘s surf contest last week at Kukio Beach in Kona - Ashley Simpson holding hands with her new old boyfriend Braxton Olita of Pearl City, who is also one of her dancers ...

British reggae band UB40 just gets bigger. Now there are two shows - March 15 and 16 - at Waikiki Shell ...

I got a call a couple of days ago from John Gummoe, who wrote Rhythm Of The Rain and was leader of the Cascades. That song was a No. 1 hit just about everywhere. We hadn’t spoken since I introduced the group in 1963 at the Show of Stars at the Civic Auditorium (they appeared with the Shirelles, Gene Pitney, and Dick & Dee Dee). The good news is that the group is together again and looking to return to Hawaii for one of our Oldies Shows. Stay tuned ...

Currently performing nightly at the Mahina lounge in the lobby of the Ala Moana Hotel, pianist Paul Conrad is celebrating 50 years of performing in Hawaii. His first gig was backing Teddi Medina in the Continental Room at the Waikiki Tavern (where the Waikiki police station stands). I remember seeing Billie Holiday perform there around that time, too ...

Yes, there is a Portuguese Consul in Hawaii, but it’s not Frank DeLima - although he was on hand to honor John Henry Felix, who is the honorary Portuguese consul and Spanish vice consul, at the Consular Corps Gala Inaugural Ball at the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. John Henry is now dean of the Consular Corps of Hawaii, which represents 39 countries covering every continent on the planet. Congrats to Mike Nakamura and the Royal Hawaiian Band for sounding fabulous that night. It’s a well-known fact that John Henry has represented Portugal in his capacity since the early days of state-hood, but how did he come to be vice consul of Spain? By personal request of Don Juan de Borbon y Battenberg, Count of Barcelona and father of Spain’s reigning king, Juan Carlos ...

A little-known annual celebration is the Hawaii Book and Music Festival, slated for April 22-23 at Honolulu Hale. It’s a terrific event combining local and visiting authors and musicians. Director Roger Jellaneck and his staff work tirelessly to eradicate illiteracy in Hawaii. I’ll be a guest speaker on April 22 from 4 p.m. It’s a free event so bring the keiki and get them books! More info can be found at hawaiibookandmusicfestival.org ...

This week in 1989: “The Ultimate Event” at Blaisdell Arena, starring Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli and Sammy Davis Jr. One of the few Arena concerts “in the round.” Surprisingly there were some empty seats - I don’t think Honolulu was ready for the (then high) $60 price tag ...

And ... the No. 1 hit on this date in 1964 was She Loves You, by the Beatles.

Listen to Uncle Tom’s Rock and Roll Drive-In every Saturday from 8am on Oldies 107.9 FM.
