This week in 1974: I make a trip to Vail, Colo., to huddle with friend Bill Thompson about a music group that will change the local music scene, whose shows were taking the area by storm - they’re rehearsing for their upcoming debut album on Columbia Records. It’s the first time I hear them, even though their “home” is the Rainbow Villa on Kalakaua Avenue, close to my office at K-POI. What I hear in Vail prompts me to promote their appearance at the Waikiki Shell on March 2 and to plan another concert following the summer release of the album. On Aug. 31, the excitement that album creates results in a record-breaking crowd of 10,000-plus in the Waikiki Shell to see Cecilio & Kapono ... The No. 1 record in Hawaii is The Way We Were by Barbra Streisand ...
