Happy birthday to “Handsome” Johnny Barend, celebrating his 81st birthday March 27. Barend first wrestled in Hawaii on Sept. 11, 1955, at the Civic Auditorium, and married local lass Annette Lum in the ring Sept. 27, 1967, at the HIC Arena before the main event in front of a sell-out crowd. Johnny and Annette are still married and live in New York ...

This week in 1970: “Handsome” Johnny Barend takes on Pedro Morales in a Sicilian Stretcher Death Match main event for 50th State Wrestling at the Arena. It’s no holds barred ... The loser must be carried to the dressing room on a stretcher while the winner walks away - but, after 19.55 minutes, both men are carried off when Barend loses and Morales collapses after leaving the ring ... The No. 1 record is Puppy Love by Paul Anka ...
