This week in 1975: Earth, Wind and Fire,in what was possibly its first appearance in Hawaii, performs at a benefit concert for “Life Of The Land” at Waikiki Shell. A Sunbums review by Michael Corcoran reads: “Earth, Wind and Fire hit the stage amid exploding flames and a bashing gong, proceeded to stir the crowd into a raging inferno. I have never seen such energy passed between artist and audience. They opened with fire and ended with smoke, and between these two extremes were two or three explosions, a bass guitarist who was rope-raised above the stage during his solo, and dancing, lots of dancing. Highlights included Keep Your Head To The Sky, Sun Goddess, Mighty, Mighty and Shining Star.” ...


Fun fact: Maurice White, the founder and leader of Earth, Wind and Fire, first performed in Hawaii July 8 and 9, 1966, at the Waikiki Shell when he was the drummer for The Ramsey Lewis Trio. I was the emcee for these concerts, which also starred Them featuring Van Morrison. On Sunday, July 10, I took Morrison and the boys from Dublin to the Garden Isle for the first concert at the new Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall ...
