Johnny Depp began shooting Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides earlier this month, but while Jack Sparrow was in Hawaii, the film’s story-line was almost leaked in a London café. Allegedly, movie workers forgot a copy of the screenplay after a breakfast meeting. Luckily a film fan found the document and turned it over to the editors at British newspaper The Sun. The anonymous Samaritan refused a sneak peek: “I’m a big fan of the films, but I managed to resist the urge to have a read. I want to enjoy the movie when it comes out”...

A couple of rock ‘n’ roll books on the market: Hawaii A Go Go by Tom Tourville focuses on the 1950s-‘80s Hawaii music scene and many of the rock, pop and contemporary Hawaiian records released here during that period. Included are 1,300 individual record listings and more than 300 photos and graphics ... Then there’s the new autobiography by Tommy James titled Me, The Mob, and the Music: One Helluva Ride With Tommy James and the Shondells. The Denver Post calls it a music-industry version of Goodfellas that provides a fascinating look at the 1960s rock scene ...


This week in 1969: Tommy James and the Shondells make their Hawaii debut, performing at the Waikiki Shell. Tickets cost $2 in advance and $3 at the door. Tommy stays at the Otani mansion at the foot of Diamond Head, the same home I’ve rented for the Young Rascals, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and others performing in Hawaii ... The No. 1 record is Crystal Blue Persuasion by Tommy James and the Shondells ...
