This week in 1987: Lionel Richie performs three sell-out concerts at Blaisdell Arena. During his second encore there’s a spectacular special effect to the hit Dancing on the Ceiling, with musicians literally dancing on the ceiling of the arena while suspended upside down on sophisticated rigging. The crowd is loving it and so am I ... until one of the musicians suddenly dangles by one leg high above the stage. Everyone’s relieved when he’s safely lowered to the deck for a happy ending to a grand concert. Ticket price? $16.50! In his Honolulu Advertiser column, Don Chapman writes: “In town for Lionel Richie’s concerts are his new manager Freddy DeMann, who also manages Madonna and Billy Idol, and Lionel’s agent Howard Rose, who has quite a stable of talent: Jimmy Buffett, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Chicago, Boston and Queen.” ...
