This week in 1968: Tommy Sands and Polynesia 68 open a new showroom†at outrigger Hotel. After moving here from Hollywood, Tommy asked Eddie Sherman and me to find him a place to perform in Waikiki.

Every club was booked, so we converted a meeting room into a nightclub with the help of Doc Kelley and Mick Hickey, and named the new venue the main showroom. Tommy performs three shows a night. Dave Donnelly writes in the June 25, 1968, Star-Bulletin: “Bursting back into the entertainment seat like a comet, Tommy sands cast a spell on capacity crowds all weekend at the outrigger’s new showroom. The hourlong show is well-paced, excellently lighted and well-microphoned. Preceding sands on the show are Sweetie Moffatt and Rosemary Alvaro breezing through a fast hula, slow hula and Tahitian dance.” Fun fact: Jack “Tihati” Thompson is a member of Polynesia 68 ... And the no. 1 record in Hawaii is This Guy’s in Love With You by Herb Alpert ...
