A FABULOUS TIME was had by all at Ward Warehouse, when I re-created a broadcast on the site of the White Top Drive In, as I did back in the ‘50s. Thanks to all who helped us celebrate with a night of oldies rock ‘n’ roll. It never ceases to amaze me when young people are enthusiastic about the music, such as 6-year-old Kenan Kai Agao, tearing up the dance floor with Lisa Nakasone, and 16-year-old Erika Conjugacion had never danced like we danced in the ‘50s, but was coaxed into trying by Pearl Harbor Shipyard’s Doug Matsumoto. They won the prize for being the best couple on the floor ...

Hawaii’s World Boxing champion Brian Viloria had a fight on his hands Feb. 18 in Las Vegas, but managed to retain his title in a unanimous decision. I’m talking to Brian’s manager Gary Gittleson about defending that title in Hawaii. Stay tuned ... Places we take for granted: Breathtaking Kula, Maui. I spent the weekend at the home of Greg and Sherlin Kowal, who purchased an old farm in need of some TLC. Turns out it’s one of Kula’s first commercial protea operations. We’re really blessed when we can vacation in a neighbor’s spare room ... so much beauty in our communities goes unappreciated when staying in hotel rooms ... I ran into Hawaii state film commissioner Donnie Dawson while on Maui, too. It was hard to tell if she was vacationing or working, but I suspect she never strays far from the next film project. Keep up the great work, Donnie! ... Over the holidays I chatted with Michael Bolton and the gorgeous Nicolette Sheridan (Desperate Housewives) while they relaxed at the Kahala Mandarin. We agreed it was time Michael did a concert here. It’s taken some schedule juggling, but it’s finally happening, ladies - his first Hawaii concert is April 6 at Blaisdell Arena ...

And speaking of hot tickets, Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West is set to perform at Blaisdell Arena on April 9 ... One of the classiest of the crop of young promoters in town, G-Spot, will host DJ Irene, Hollywood’s (and the world’s) diva of dance mixes, at Wave Waikiki on March 18 ...

Tim Bostock presents the Dirty Dozen Brass Band with The Dixie Hummingbirds, playing Sacred Sounds of New Orleans and Southern Gospel this Sunday at Hawaii Theatre starting at 4 p.m. ... Where Are They Now: Mel (The Money Man) Lawrence, former Poi-Boy and Woodstock immortal, has been producing and directing documentaries for the past 20 years. He’s currently making several docus in Mexico - Mundo Tequila, a journey through the fascinating world surrounding Mexico’s national drink, tequila, and Un retrato de Diego, a portrait of Mexico’s most famous artist and muralist, Diego Rivera ... Notso-retired Keith and Carmen Haugen, who performed longer (17 years) at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel than any act in its history, are being honored with the first Legacy Award from the Music Foundation of Hawaii on March 16. Only Don Ho and the Society of Seven have been regulars in Waikiki longer than the Haugens’32 years. Keith pointed out that I accidentally renamed Royal Hawaiian Band leader Mike Nakasone in my last column - very sorry, Mike! Especially because I’ve known you since you were a member of the Mopptops, a staple of the old Fat City and Funny Farm! ...

This week in 1974: Cecilio and Kapono performed in their first Waikiki Shell concert before a crowd of about 5,000. Shortly thereafter, ELUA, their first Columbia Records album, was released. When I brought them back to the Shell the following Labor Day weekend, a record-breaking 10,000 attended. ... At the top of the Hawaii charts this same week in ‘74: Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks.

Listen to Uncle Tom’s Rock and Roll Drive-In every Saturday from 8 a.m. on Oldies 107.9 FM.
