It’s ironic that NBC’s hit TV show Las Vegas will be calling our very own Turtle Bay Resort its “sister” Montecito Resort and Casino soon, because that’s what Sahara Hotel owner Del Webb intended when he opened it in 1972. The story is that he was so certain that gambling would become an island attraction that the lobby of the Kuilima Resort (as it was then known) resembled those in Las Vegas casinos. ROLL ON: It’s 1971, and Roll On by the New Colony Six makes its debut on the K-Poi Action 20. There’s a West Coast dock strike in progress - no freighters are arriving from Mainland suppliers. Items like toilet paper are in short supply, so K-Poi begins a contest where the correct caller can win a roll of the stuff when hearing Roll On or a promo including part of the song.
