This week in 1957: The first Show of Stars is presented at the Civic Auditorium starring the Five Satins, Don & Dewey and Sonny Knight. We come up with an idea that helps sell tickets - the school selling the most tickets gets a private concert by the Five Satins. The winner: Waipahu High School! I have just recorded a rock version of the Alfred Apaka classic, Beyond The Reef. It becomes a local hit, and my record company thinks I should sing the song at the school. On the way to Waipahu, I ask the Satins if they would back me - and they agree to ... wow! When the show opens the following night at the Civic, I was to sing my “hit” backed by the Charlie Santos “Show Of Stars” orchestra. I walk out on stage, and who should be sitting in the front row? Hawaii’s singing superstar Alfred Apaka and Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Kaiser! Looking down at their smiling faces, I immediately discard any plans to sing and just emcee the show. Dear Uncle Tom;

It’s such a joy reading your columns and reminiscing about the good ol’ days of local entertainment. As a former employee of the old KGMB, which turned into K59 and currently KSSK,and KKUA, it puts a smile on my face when you talk about your KPOI days. I can remember when your station would broadcast the Top 300. I used to make a list of the songs just about every year. Great stuff. And I can also remember when I won a clock radio on your show. The question was what year did LBJ first visit Hawaii…..Any way keep up the good work…Aloha

Best wishes;
