CONCERT OF THE YEAR! U2 set a phenomenal concert crowd record of more than 45,000 at Aloha Stadium, eclipsing previous record-holder Janet Jackson‘s Hawaii debut of 38,000 back in 1999. There was great company to be had with the likes of Bill Gates, Pierce Brosnan, Cindy Crawford, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Erik Sandin of NoFX, Laird Hamilton, Gabby Reece, Daryl Hannah, Kid Rock, Jeremy Piven, Dave Kalama, Alyssa Milano, Shep Gordon, Hoku Ho, Andy Irons, Bruce Irons, Mark Occilupo, Joel “Parko” Parkinson, majority of the LOST cast and crew including executive producers Carlton Cuse and Jack Bender ...

After the show, several of us were invited to a party hosted by the band on the USS Missouri. Bono and manager Paul McGuinness are such ardent Elvis fans ... I presented each of them with a gift bag of Elvis memorabilia which included Jerry HopkinsElvis in Hawaii and a bottle of Elvis’ Blue Christmas Cabernet Sauvignon from the Graceland Vineyards. Bono, who had just mentioned that earlier in the day he traveled to the North Shore to see the home where Elvis once stayed, looked at the bottle, then looked at me and said, “This is brilliant!”

This Week In 1956: The Hawaii premiere of Elvis Presley’s first movie, Love me Tender, is held at the Waikiki Theater. Dick Howard of Consolidated Amusement, who owns the theater, scores me a coveted prize from Paramount Pictures - the actual hat Elvis wore in the movie! The winner is 13-year-old St. Andrews Priory student Evelyn Hirai, chosen from a sea of more than 50,000 letters. Wonder if she’s still wearing it? I always thought this contest was one of the reasons Colonel Parker agreed to bring Elvis to the old Honolulu Stadium a year later ...
