LAST WEEK I wrote about Jerry Hopkins being in Hawaii to write a book about Don Ho. On Thursday April 12, after dinner at Duke’s, Jerry, publisher George Engebretson and yers truly went to the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel to catch what would be Don’s last show. Don was great, getting a standing ovation after his final song, Kui Lee’s Ain’t No Big Thing. After the showroom emptied, Don and his wife Haumea joined the three of us to trade stories and laugh until just before midnight. Don was in rare form, obviously enjoying the get-together. It was the Don that we’ve known and loved through the years and I’m thankful for that special time together after that final Don Ho show ... Aloha, Don ...

This Week in 1982: Jimmy Buffett performs his first Waikiki Shell concert. It’s an acoustic evening featuring his brilliant keyboard virtuoso, Mike Utley. The crowd goes wild when Jimmy brings a surprise guest on stage to join him in singing Margaritaville - Neil Young! Shortly after, we head for a concert in Tahiti at the O’tac in Papeete. While there Jimmy writes, with former Hawaii resident Bobby Holmcomb, one of my favorite Buffett classics, One Particular Harbor...

The No. 1 record in Hawaii is, Ebony and Ivory by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder.
