Overheard at the sold-out Kenny Rankin concert, “This is the best concert I’ve ever been to.” Many in the audience agree by giving a unanimous standing ovation. Among the notables: Amy Hanaialii and brother Eric Gilliom. As we were chatting after the show, I mentioned hearing a soon-to-be-released recording of Kenny singing the standard Prisoner of Love with Frankie Valli. Amy and Eric couldn’t recall the song, so I found myself singing a few bars in the parking lot of Mamiya Theatre ... later wondering if these two multiple-Hoku winners now realized why I present shows instead of performing in them ...

At the urging of Ben and Vicky Cayetano, I took in the smash Broadway musical Jersey Boys at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles a few nights earlier. The story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, the evening was well worth the trip. What a show! ...

Congratulations to niece Lisa Kowal and Neil Rose, who tied the knot last Saturday with a beautiful reception held at the Monarch Room of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Both are Punahou and Harvard grads: Lisa was named MVP of the women’s basketball team and Neil - Harvard’s star quarterback - set 18 school records for passing, touchdowns and other offensive records.
