PRIMO RETURNS - Quite the party last week celebrating the return of Hawaii’s favorite beer! The good news is it tastes great like the Primo of old. In its post-war heyday, it was the pride and joy of brewmaster Harry Birsner. The brewery was located at Kapiolani and Cooke, just a couple blocks from the Advertiser News Building, which also housed KGU Radio. KGU would broadcast a nightly sports show hosted by Gordon Grey and Birsner from the “Primo Penthouse” on the second floor. One of my last daily duties as a KGU junior announcer was to introduce their show. Often (along with announcers Ron Jacobs, Dick Halvorsen, Jim Wahl and Vince Priore) we’d head for the Penthouse where the beer was cold, delicious and free! The new Primo will be available in draft this month, bottles next spring with aloha from the historic Pabst Brewing Company ...
