Kailua Intermediate’s Robert Heckman is a national finalist ($1,000 cash, $125 Walmart card for classroom, free trip) in the Broadcom Masters competition for grades 6-8 in math, applied science, technology and engineering. He and his teacher Derek Esibill were in Washington, D.C., this week where Robert competed against 29 other students for even more prizes and awards. His project is “Coral Tumors, Parrotfish Predation and Bacteria.” Go, Robert! The Oct. 4 banquet there includes a speech by Jeopardy champion and U.S. Rep. Rush Holt, a New Jersey physicist ...


Kaneohe’s Bob Barry had an exciting summer, too. A member of the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Bob was invited to train goalkeepers at Husson University in Maine. Before that, he stopped by the USA National Masters Track Meet in Cleveland and won bronze medals for his 70-74 age group in shot put and discus ...
