Castle Medical Center recently held a week of “spiritual emphasis,” which must have been appreciated by its communications director Jasmin Rodriguez. She was in a similar job at St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center in Manhattan during the Sept. 11 attacks. The New York City hospital became a command center for all emergency care as well as for Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Among other things, Jasmin gave hourly press briefings, set up triage teams and opened a family center visited by more than 6,500 people searching for relatives during the chaotic days that followed the Twin Towers’collapse ...

Kalaheo’s Navy JROTCS cadets reported to Kaneohe Marine base for spring break - and they didn’t get a break. The rigorous training camp included, for example, a visit to the base gas chamber in full gear: “It was a little scary,” sophomore Brendan Tourek admitted to the Hawaii Marine. “I know the masks will work, but I can already smell the stuff, and it kind of burns” ... UH-Manoa scientist Kim Binsted was still moving into her new Kaneohe house April 25 when she had to take off for Mars - a four-month Mars simulation mission, that is, on an island in the Canadian Arctic. Kim is chief scientist of the crew, leading projects and being a guinea pig of various experiments. And she’ll have to wear a bulky spacesuit every time she goes outside. Her six colleagues are smart and easy to get along with, she says, “which is very important because living and working together in such a small space (500 sq. ft.) for such a long time will be very challenging” ...

H. Maxwell Kopper of Kaneohe, a senior at American University, made the fall dean’s list at the Washington, D.C., college. And Kailua’s Sara Wynhoff, an arts and sciences student at Northwestern University, earned a place on the winter-quarter dean’s list in Evanston, Ill. ...

About 50 curious keiki visited the Golden Eagles’hangar at Kaneohe Marine base and learned all about the P-3 Orion plane, inside and out. To prove to skeptical tots just how the sonobuoy cannisters drop buoys in the water, Hawaii Marine reports that Petty Officer 2C Ryan Sanders performed an impromptu maneuver: He sneaked out of the plane and waved up at them through the tubes ...
