Young Kaneohe scientist Micah Maetani took his research project to the International Science Fair in Albuquerque last week. Micah, a junior at Kamehameha, took first for senior research at the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools science fair. His project, if you’re ready for it, is “Growth Inhibition of Metastatic Prostate Cancer: Effect of Methanolic Extracts from Various Nuts” ... Retired (but not silent!) philosophy professor Ken Conklin of Kaneohe has published a new book, Hawaiian Apartheid - Racial Separatism and Ethnic Nationalism in the Aloha State. See it for yourself at amazon.com or at http://tinyurl.com/2a9fqa ...

Kailua’s Kathryn Matayoshi is the Honolulu Business Roundtable’s new executive director, a natural evolution for the former state commerce director and business attorney ... Kailua’s Shannon Wood of the Windward Ahupua’a Alliance was in a social whirl last weekend, but a unique one. Her plan was to collect all the recyclable containers at the Lanikai melodrama, at a Kailua canoe regatta and at the Crater Festival in Diamond Head ... Adviser Tiffany Yango-Au proudly reports that Castle High’s student newspaper, Pali O Koolau, “swept all the writing and photography honors for the Windward District” in the preliminaries of the annual Hawaii high school journalism contest ...

She also cares for people - as an RN and former nursing instructor at Hawaii Loa and UH. Next up for Betsy? Promoting our sign laws, open green space and the value of trees ... Enchanted Lake Elementary first-grader Ocean Hitchcock will have his artwork published in the 2007-2008 Comprehensive Health Education calendar ... Laie favorites Lehi Aumua and David Galea’i earned a respectable second place in the World Fireknife Duet Competition last weekend at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Tying for third were partners Daniel Morry (also of Laie) and Sakaie Pupualii of Samoa ... Nearby, despite the noxious pesticide aroma permeating the Kahuku High upper campus from May 3 to 9, its public library remained open for business. Reading is serious stuff, folks ... Young Kaneohe songstress Briana Pratt, who joined the Don Ho show just before he died, sang Listen (from Dreamgirls) at his memorial tribute May 5 in Waikiki. The high school freshman earned a spot on Don’s show by winning the karaoke contest at his namesake restaurant ... Along with the 2007 Nene awards for favorite children’s books come contests themed after Eragon, the 2006 winner. Aikahi Elementary’s Alecia Griffin and Katherine Seth read their winning essays at the May 11 ceremony, while first-place winners in performance, Lanikai’s Austin and David Neuberger, sang their original song for the crowd.
