A superhero wannabe from Kahuku, Melody Mooney, made the cut for the reality show Who Wants to be a Superhero, Season 2. The Kahuku and BYU-Hawaii graduate portrays “Hygena” (an expert fighter of crime and grime) on the show. It premieres at 9 p.m. July 26 on the SciFi Network ... Things must be squared away for the HEARTS musical Fiddler on the Roof, whose young cast has been rehearsing at Kailua Church of the Nazarene for weeks and will play at Hawaii Theatre at 7 p.m. Aug. 2 and 3 (741-2787). At one point, the fiddler was laying a few too many high notes, prompting director Rachel DeBoard and choral director Pamela DeBoard to actively recruit “four more teenage boys with changed voices” for the annual summer show ...
Kailua’s Alexa Jacrouz Biggs has joined Belt Collins Hawaii as a geographic information systems project manager. In addition to multiple degrees and experience in the field, Alexa is active in the Aikahi PTSA, the Aikahi Gardens board and the Hawaii Geographic Information Coordinating Council ... If Alexa sets up her GPS for sign-waving traffic monitors, it would zero in on Maunawili Elementary’s CTAP volunteers.
Look for Rachel Hyland and the gang (carefully) from 6 to 8 a.m. Aug. 1 and 3 at key locations near the school, reminding motorists to slow down for the kids ... Congralutations to Paliku manager Tom Holowach, who received the 2007 WCC Chancellor’s Award from Angela Meixell for promoting and expanding the theater into the community ...
The Honolulu Club has named Kalaheo High and HPU graduate Beth Aylward its general manager, overseeing all departments at the premier athletic club. Her previous job in the fitness industry was for Club One Properties in Northern California ... My family and I were entranced by tales of witches on our just-completed vacation in Ireland. (Ask Kelly and Erin about those mysterious white orbs on their digital photos of St. Audeon’s medieval churchyard at night) ... Giving a lighter touch to witchery are Castle Performing Arts Center alumni Cliffton Hall and Alex Selma. Cliffton plays a lead role in the national touring show of Wicked (along with wife Dee-Dee Magno), and Alex is in L.A.‘s Wicked musical. (I know because we saw him swirling across the stage with the witches last week in the packed Pantages Theatre) ... Speaking of the occult, the Kailua-based IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre needs docents and tarot card readers for its The Living Tarot production Aug. 2-11. Call Brian at 262-0110 ... Meanwhile, the Windward Christian Writers group is very blessed, according to Carmen Leal. “We’re up to about 14 people and growing every meeting,” she says (see calendar). “Hopefully people will start getting published!” ...
