What is Neurotransmitter Restoration or Amino Acid IV Therapy?

By Dr. Teresa A. Denney D.O., LAC

Increasing numbers of physicians are utilizing Intravenous (IV) Therapy as part of their approach to helping patients restore or maintain their health. Amino Acid IV Therapy also called Neurotransmitter Restoration (NTR), is a safe all-natural approach to treating the imbalance of chemicals in the brain caused by the addictive use of any substances that we crave. Addiction to any drug or combination of drugs or other substances, responds equally well to Amino Acid IV Therapy.

Research has revealed that physical cravings we experience are caused by an imbalance of neurotransmitters, primarily in the reward centers of the brain. These cravings and urges are major diagnostic indicators of chemical dependency. This is the same imbalance that causes the uncomfortable and sometimes life-threatening withdrawal effects by discontinuing use of our addiction stimuli.

Using Amino Acid IV Therapy, neural receptors which have been overly stimulated, are returned to their original state. This results in a safe and comfortable detoxification and the complete elimination of physical dependencies on the addictive substances.

Amino Acid IV Therapy was first developed by Dr. William Hitt, an award-winning physician and pioneering scientist, in the mid 1980s after a lifetime of research involving amino acids. In its initial clinical application, approximately 3000 patients were treated using NTR with a documented recovery rate three years after treatment of 90%. This is a 200%-700% increase in successful treatment over current, treatment programs.

Treatment begins with a consultation with our physicians to recreate a thorough drug history. The treatment relies on the accuracy of each patient’s report as to the substances used in their lifetime. The complete substance history is necessary to address the chemical changes made in the brain. If this is incomplete then the treatment will not be complete. In addition, if any mood-altering substances are used after the treatment is complete, the chemical balance of the brain will be altered and the substance cravings will return. Habits take 21 days to change. We use amino acid supplements to help alleviate anxiety or cravings that may come with this change.

Based upon this information, the physicians determine what amino acids will rebalance the brain chemicals or “neurotransmitters” to their original state. Amino acids and vitamins are individually formulated for each patient based on the substances that they have ever used. The formulations are then administered intravenously, under the supervision of licensed physicians and staff, each day for ten days.

Most patients report no discomfort. Some patients experience mild stomach upset and/or diarrhea during the first 24 hours and no patients have reported significant pain or discomfort.

We offer six additional IV treatments one a month to continue addressing the physical dependency or cravings. However, it is important to understand that Amino Acid IV Therapy eliminates physiologically based drug cravings, and will have little impact upon the emotional or psychological components. Psychological treatment is recommended for addressing persistent thinking and feeling patterns. Our program in Hawaii works closely with Dr. Sisco from Denver. We will be at the Total Well Being Expo March 8 & 9, or call 732-0888.
