Along with the rest of us, ‘Umeke Market has seen a rough year come and go. But 2010 has great potential to nurture ‘Umekes continual growth. It has blossomed from an itty bitty Kaimuki Health Market off of Waialae with only 5 employees to a flourishing market with over 50 employees plus our downtown location. Hello, my name is Raymi! As your General Manager, I’m proud to say that I’ve been with the ‘Umeke Family for over 9 years and have watched it thrive!

‘Umeke Market is a family-owned and operated business by husband and wife team Daryl and Michelle Yamaguchi. In 1947, Daryl’s grandparents operated the E.S. Yamaguchi Family Market in the old farmer’s market building in Kakaako. In 1997, Daryl and his sister Debbie carried on that family tradition by opening Kaimuki Health Market (corner of 11th ave. and Harding), which later grew, relocated and was renamed in 2003 as ‘Umeke Market Natural Foods & Deli. ‘Umeke is the Hawaiian word for calabash, or wooden bowl. In ancient times, ‘umekes were used for medicinal and culinary practices. In modern times, ‘umekes are given as gifts or awards.

Through all these years, one Umeke Market’s top priority is to appreciate and thank our customers for their patronage. I am happy to say that even with our economic challenges, people are still conscious about their health and still making healthy lifestyle choices as their priority.

As a local company we want to support the movement of keeping it healthy, fresh and affordable for the community.
