‘Umeke Market’s Quinoa Pilaf

By Michelle Yamaguchi

Congratulations to all of you who have consciously added brown rice and more whole grains into your diet. You have truly taken positive steps in the right direction.

Of course, there is always more that you can do. And should do. The good news is: eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice taste.

That’s why we’d like to introduce you to Quinoa, a grain that is being hailed as the “almost perfect food.” And a “super grain.” And it’s delicious!!

At ‘Umeke Market, we make a number of Quinoa (pronounced Keen-Wah) Salads because we think you should get maximum nutritional value from the foods you eat. Our Quinoa Salads are some of the best tasting and most popular salads we make.

They include: Quinoa with Edamame & Shiitake Mushrooms, Quinoa Pilaf with Toasted Pumpkin Seeds, Lemon Basil Quinoa with Black Beans, Quinoa Tabbouleh, and Quinoa with Lentils & Curry.

Our goal at ‘Umeke Market is to teach you about healthy foods. We’ll teach you what to eat and why to eat it. We’ll even tell you how to cook it.

We want you to learn how great healthy foods can taste. The best way to do that is by letting you try them. We gladly provide samples at the Deli counter. If you don’t see any already out, please ask.

We choose to use a lot of Quinoa at ‘Umeke Market for a couple of reasons. In addition to its great taste and unique texture, Quinoa is one of only a few grains that contain protein. That means, if you add Quinoa to your meal, you may also choose to eat less meat or no meat and still get much-needed protein into your diet.

And if there’s one thing we learned from diet programs such as the Atkin’s Diet, it’s that Protein is an essential component in any diet.

Protein will help sustain you longer between meals and help build muscle. In addition to protein, Quinoa also contains fiber, starch, vitamins and minerals, and amino acids, which are usually lacking in other grains.

It doesn’t get much better than Quinoa.

As Oprah says: “When we know better, we should do better.”

And now you know about Quinoa. For more information, please visit us at 4400 Kalanianaole Highway in Kahala 739-2990 or at our new location at 1001 Bishop Street, Suite 110, 522-7377.
