The Hawaii Army National Guard celebrated the grand opening of its new recruiting office at the Aiea Shopping Center Oct. 2, and business is booming.

The office is now located a mere stone’s throw from the Hawaii Air National Guard office. The two stations currently share Soldier and Airman recruiters, and hope to establish a joint office in the near future.

“It really helps make us more accessible,” Lt. Col. Charles Anthony, public affairs officer, said of the new recruiting location, which previously was limited to the headquarters office on Diamond Head Road. “It helps us to get walk-ins.

Particularly after 9/11, access to military installations was tightened, so this new site helps make us more public.

“Having an Army Guard recruiting station enables us to get that person who might be going to, say, Mc-Donald’s, and then they see the office and go, ‘Oh, I’ll go check that out. I’ve got an extra 10 minutes and it’s right there.’”
