Navy League Adopts Ship

PEARL HARBOR (NNS) - Navy League Honolulu Council (NLHC) held an adoption ceremony for the guided-missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) on the ship’s flight deck Dec. 14.

The ceremony was held to formally recognize the partnership between Chung-Hoon and NLHC.

“It is a great honor to adopt the USS ChungHoon here today,” said Don Morrison, president of NLHC. “We at NLHC felt that if there was a ship to adopt, it should be the Chung-Hoon. This ship is named after a servicemember who was Hawaiian-born and NLHC has participated in many events involving Chung-Hoon.”

Cmdr. Michael McCartney, commanding officer of Chung-Hoon, extended his thanks for NLHC’s involvement with Chung-Hoon.

“I want to take this time to say thank you for NLHC’s commitment to Chung-Hoon,” said Mc-Cartney. “NLHC has been involved with this ship since the commissioning ceremony back in 2004. They [NLHC] will no longer just be friends of Chung-Hoon, they will now be shipmates.”

One way the Navy League furthers this objective is through the “adoption” of ships and units of the sea services.

The purpose of adopting a ship, station, or other military unit or facility is to concentrate the efforts of local Navy League members on that particular ship or station.

USS Chung-Hoon was named in honor of Rear Adm. Gordon Pai’ea Chung-Hoon. ChungHoon is a recipient of the Navy Cross and Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and extraordinar y heroism as commanding officer of USS Sigsbee (DD 502) from May 1944 to October 1945.

The mission of the Navy League is to educate American citizens and their elected officials about naval matters and the importance of sea power to keeping the seas free.
