Revving up things at KITV

Lara Yamada is not your typical news anchor. Not because she rides a motorcycle and does taekwan do, but because she’s an investigative reporter

world.”

Yamada met her husband through her roommate at UH.

He’s originally from Chicago, but was living in Hawaii at the time, working in construction as a contractor. A few years ago, he changed careers and is now a medical eye technician.

“He’s just thrilled to be back with all his buddies, and they all love to be out riding their dirt bikes and doing all the things they do outdoors here,” adds Yamada. “And his parents have been living on the North Shore for more than 20 years.”

The couple, along with their two basset hounds, Maya and Roscoe, will be settling into a home in East Oahu.

Yamada learned about the anchor opening at KITV4 while attending the Asian American Journalists Association national convention in Boston last summer. Paula Akana has been the solo anchor for the station’s 10 p.m. newscast for the past year and a half after Shawn Ching left to pursue a career in law. She also has been solo at the 6 p.m. newscast since January when Pamela Young moved to the weekend anchor desk.

“I’ve been really waiting for her to come,” says Akana about her new co-anchor. “I love anchoring and reporting, but you don’t get to do very much reporting if you’re anchoring all the shows. And now that we do a full hour at 10, it’s a real challenge as a solo person.

“I remember Lara was always upbeat, and it’s neat because she’s from here. When you get a new partner, you never know what to expect, but it’s like I know her already and she brings this great experience from being on the East Coast to the West Coast, and I think it’ll really help us. She’s inquisitive and she’s got a lot of energy.”

“I have a pretty wicked sense of humor,” adds Yamada. “So, I have to edit myself so I don’t get myself in trouble.”

Welcome home.
