Bed bugs can quickly infest an area

ed prevention treatments are the best control methods, according to Lyons.

“Bed bugs are indiscriminate,” he says. “They don’t care if they’re invading low-cost housing or a luxury residence. And they’re very resilient, surviving months without feeding.”

A pest control operator usually employs an integrated approach, using mechanical controls such as cleaning or heat at high temperatures. The Hawaii Pest Control Board recently approved the use of ThermaPureHeat, a proven and green technology, as a new weapon in the battle against bed bugs and their eggs.

So while commercial solutions are being used, including bed bug-sniffing dogs for inspections, individuals are advised to employ that tried-and-true, inexpensive technique known as common sense.

When traveling, check headboards, mattresses and box springs for bed bugs. Dark blood spots are a tell-tale sign. Store suitcases on luggage racks far from the bed as possible. When returning home, vacuum suitcases and immediately wash clothing in hot water.

Use zippered encasements on infested mattresses and box springs. Never pick up used mattresses or furniture left curbside.

Guess that’s a wrap on this story, sir. There’s a lot of good information and advice on the Internet for folks who want to become bed bug experts, including the Hawaii Dept of Health web site.

Now if only we can find an informative source for how to cure an anxious journalist of a suddenly acquired twitch and itch…

Your humble servant, Whatshername.
