Brooks, who says he used to be a little chubby boy with glasses, stays in shape by surfing, going to the gym and boxing.
Last July, Extra TV voted him America’s Most Eligible Bachelor. He’s still single, but says he’s married to his work.
“It’s hard for me because (if I was in a relationship) I would want to spend a lot of time and effort on it, but we spend a lot of time shooting and my first priority right now is my work,” states Brooks. “My schedule is pretty crazy. We try to shoot six episodes in five days, and I have to memorize 20 to 60 pages (of script). Depending on what kind of shots they have to shoot, some days I’m here on the set from only noon to 4 p.m. and sometimes I’m here from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.”
Brooks calls Days of Our Lives his “first big thing” in acting, and fans will be happy to know that his contract with the show was recently renewed, so he’ll be staying in Salem for awhile.
“It’s a great first gig,” he says. “You learn so much, and it has been huge for my memorization skills.Also, the people are great and the atmosphere is great.”
In the little free time that he has, Brooks has been writing a couple of scripts and even has some comedy movies that he and his writing partners have come up with.
“I want to do movies,” he says on his future in acting. “That’s where I want to end up.”
He also wants to eventually move back to Hawaii and raise a family. His next trip home will hopefully happen this summer when he gets two weeks off from shooting.

“When I’m home I surf and eat,” says Brooks, who lists his favorite surf spots as the North Shore, Sandy’s, Irma’s, Waikiki, Rock Piles, Paikos and Diamond Head. “I try to come back every three months to get some good surf and some good sun. I do surf a little in L.A. but it’s so cold and dirty.
“Also, when I’m home, I have to go to Mitsu-Ken at some point. And I love Kozo Sushi handrolls, I’ll get five or six of those. And Yummy’s and Leonard’s malassadas.
“Growing up in Hawaii was such a great experience for me and I would love for my kids to have that. It’s a magical place and I’ll probably come back at some point.”
As for crazy fan experiences, Brooks says sometimes people forget that Max Brady isn’t real and continually question him on things that he does.
“They’ll ask me why did you break up with Morgan, and I’m like I didn’t do it. The writers made me do it,“he says.“And sometimes I’ll hear someone say Max, and I think should I turn or should I not? A lot of times people will call me Max and not Darin.
“Sometimes people will recognize me, not so much here (in L.A.) but when I go anywhere in the South. And in Vegas too. Sometimes in Hawaii, but not as much.
“I was at a boot store in Tennessee and these people were coming up to me and this person said, ‘Look, I don’t want to make a big scene but I know who you are. I love Days and Max and can you sign this piece of paper for me?’ That’s when it hit me.”
You could call it a Cinderella story.
‘Days of our Lives’ airs Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. on NBC. The 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will air live on ABC June 20.
