THE ULTIMATE CAR SHOW
Hot Import Nights, the ‘world cup’ of car shows, hits Blaisdell Exhibition Hall Saturday with the hottest custom rides in competition along with a host of celebrities - including popular ‘Deal or No Deal’ suitcase model Ursula Mayes
This Saturday at Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall car enthusiasts of all kinds will get the chance to attend the World Cup of car shows.
Hot Import Nights makes its annual return to Honolulu and brings a show that has yet to be duplicated. Thousands across the nation work on their cars all year for the chance to enter and win top dog in the country’s premier underground car show. For the past decade, HIN has made its mark in the custom car community as a whole, not just in the import scene. Today HIN sells out its entries at the 21 shows it puts on across the U.S. with more than half a million attendees annually.
“We don’t have enough space to accommodate all of the entries that want to enter the show,” says Thanh Phan, automotive director of HIN. “And it’s not just in Honolulu, it’s everywhere we go.
“The unique thing about Hawaii is that they are the trend-setters, and a lot of that has to do with Hawaii being so close to Japan. When it comes to JDM (engines) or VIP (auto parts), Hawaii people are purists and the rest of the country is still developing their style.”
Hot Import Nights brings a lifestyle to a city with its unique nightclub atmosphere, cast of celebrities and world-renowned models. Deal or No Deal suitcase model No. 5 Ursula Mayes is a former Miss HIN and one of several celebrities who will appear at the one-night event. Mayes built a huge following of fans while on tour with HIN, and many of them travel across the country just to see their favorite import cover girl.
“I’ll meet people at the show in one city and then I’ll see the same people at another show in a different city,” says Phan. “And I’ve run into people who travel from show to show just to see Ursula. But we also have car owners who drive or trailer their cars to the next city so they can be in the next show.”
Those who enter cars in HIN attract other enthusiasts who are looking for new ideas and the latest parts on the market for their ride at home. HIN brings the aftermarket industry right to spectators with vendors that sell products for every part of the car. Many companies in the after-market industry make every effort to attend HIN for the chance to network with others and seek new customers.
“This year we helped put together a friend’s LS430 with some of the latest VIP parts, which will be displayed at our booth at Hot Import Nights,” says Bryan Lee, who is a distributor of Junction Produce and Session products in Hawaii. “It gives all of us at Eurosport valuable exposure to a crowd that is looking at the latest parts and accessories for their cars. And we’re educating the public about the VIP style because not everyone is interested in tuners or racing. The VIP style is a more mellow, kicked-back kind of lifestyle and it’s growing every day, so that’s what we hope to do at Hot Import Nights.”
