It’s A Wrap

Proven as a way to lose pounds in a hurry, body wraps also are touted as a way of removing toxins. MidWeek’s writer just had to find out for herself

Even the body needs a good spring cleaning now and then to rid itself of the toxins it encounters in everyday life. And while there are many treatments available to detoxify the body, as I discovered recently, there’s no process more relaxing and divine than a body wrap.

Warm massages, the aroma of soothing essential oils, soft gentle music - how can something so beneficial be so alluring? And when you compare it to its counterparts, the option becomes even lovelier. Other detoxification methods such as fasting, colonics and enemas don’t exactly evoke that same warm and fuzzy feeling.

And so I took a quick break away from the kids and headed over to Ampy’s A Day Spa for a detoxifying Aromatherapy Body Wrap. My mission: to cleanse my body of all the toxins that may have accumulated over the past nine months of pregnancy and perhaps tone up my postpartum tummy. And as an added bonus, get in some relaxation and pampering.

Let’s just say it was worth every penny.

No, I didn’t walk out looking like I dripped out what nine months had put on, but I felt amazing and could definitely see a difference in the firmness of my tummy. Plus, I was relaxed, and my skin was silky soft and smelled wonderful.

The session begins with a full body dry brush, which is done to remove the dead skin cells and also to increase circulation. This process helps the body to better receive the detoxifying slimming oil. The slimming oil is then massaged evenly over my entire body.

“The properties in the slimming that are detoxifying and toning for body are lemon and bladderwack,” says Nicole Santiago-Vierra, president of Ampy’s A Day Spa. “Bladderwack is a seaweed-based ingredient, and basically it draws the toxins out of the cells. The oil that we use is not only detoxifying, but it works on the skin itself and acts also as a toner.

“So that not only are you losing toxins and excess water, but you’re also toning your skin on top of it.”

After the oil is generously applied, a thermal heating wrap is tightly placed around the entire body. Then a space blanket is placed over the thermal heating wrap. These two elements combined with a heating lamp above the bed and a heating pad below assures the maximum detoxification benefits.

“You are cocooned in it and it’s much like creating your own furnace,” adds Santiago-Vierra.

After the wrap is all in place I’m given a hand and foot massage, which I thought was just an added bonus. In fact, the massage is incorporated into the session to continue the process of circulation, which helps the body detoxify. Thanks to the mini massages and the soothing aromas of aromatherapy oils, I found myself drifting in and out of sleep during the 45 minutes wrapped up.

The wrap is then removed. For those few moments after the space blanket was taken off and the thermal wrap loosened I could actually feel the pool of water underneath me.

The session is topped off with some moisturizing spray applied to the entire body, which is equally as yummy smelling as the oil itself.

“With this whole detoxification process, what you are basically doing is exciting the sudiferous gland,” says Santiago-Vierra. “The body’s cells are about 90 percent water, and inside are toxins. So if you add a product that is detoxifying like the bladderwack and lemon, it not only helps keep your cells going, but it also helps to excrete some of the toxins from your sudiferous glands.”

The slimming effect of the wrap depends on the body. Generally, if the body has more weight to lose, then more is lost. Results can vary anywhere from two to 20 inches all over the body.

“A lot of people get this wrap for various reasons - we have some women who come in once a week prior to the wedding, we have those who do it to drop a lot of water weight, some use it as an external diuretic so you’re not taxing your kidneys, and post pregnancy is also very popular,” says Santiago-Vierra. “It is also our most popular wrap.”

The Detoxifying Wrap is also the most
